Reception News – Term 3, Week 1

We have welcomed the children back to school this week. They have come back with a lot of enthusiasm for our new topic; ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. We have read the story in our classes and learnt parts of it, making up actions too. In each classroom there is a new role play area set up as the bears cave. The children have loved playing in it and pretending to be the characters from the story.

This week, we have recapped all of Term 1 and 2 tricky words, phonemes and digraphs. We have read with all of the children and it’s great to hear they have retained so much knowledge from last term. The children have been using their phonics knowledge to write down what they did during the school holidays. We shared our experiences with the class before writing them. It was great to hear what a fun holiday everybody had!

In maths, the children have been combining two parts to make a whole. They have done this using -the part-part whole model and been using tens frames. We have explored many different ways to make the same number. For example, 6 can be made with 1 and 5, 2 and 4, 3 and 3. Putting the numbers together makes the whole.

In week 3 (20-24th January 2020), we are going to be learning about 3D shapes. We are asking for parents to come into school and take two children at a time to design and then make models using 3D objects. Each class will have a signup sheet on their noticeboard. If you are able to help some point during this week, we would really appreciate you signing up. During this week, we would also really appreciate it if you could bring into school any SMALL cardboard recycling you have at home.
