Year 1 News- Term 3, Week 6

Our final week completed! Year One have produced some lovely work across the subjects this week and despite some tiredness have still worked like super stars.

In English this week, sticking with our traditional tales theme we have based are learning around the book, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We have had great fun role playing and acting out parts of the characters in the story, discussing their emotions and describing them, collecting a word bank of adjectives to describe each character. Children have produced some fantastic retells, including phrases of language and speech from the book, setting the scene using beautiful descriptive language, with their own creative twists. These were brilliant, especially after the practice of our 3 little pig retells the week previous.

In Maths we have been thinking about length and measure and the difference between measuring in height, ‘taller vs shorter’ and length ‘long vs short’ and the best way to describe an object in regards to these. We have referred to our working walls for appropriate and accurate mathematical language in order to help us describe and compare lengths (tall, taller, tallest, short, shorter, shortest, long, longer, longest).

This week we have had Chartwells in to do a healthy food workshop linked to our PSHE learning about dreams and goals, where we talked about good nutrition and healthy food choices. We made an edible food picture with fruit and vegetables which we then got to eat!

In Science we have continued our learning around materials this week, we have been thinking about the properties of various different materials and referring back to our houses in which we created in our science learning last week in small groups.

Please refer to your children’s personalised sounds and keywords stickers which this week will be stuck in their reading log books. These will contain sounds in which would be beneficial for your child to recap in our learning from this term over the half term break.

From all the staff in Year One, Happy Holidays and see you in Term 4!
