Reception News – Term 4 Week 1

This week, the children have really enjoyed starting the topic for this term, Africa/Kenya. They have loved playing in our new role play areas which are all tourist offices where the children can find out more about Africa. The children have learnt an African song and located Africa and Kenya on a world map. Next week, we will be introducing the children to the story ‘Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain’ by Verna Aardema and focusing our work on this for a couple of weeks. As we do every week, we have been doing PE and using the apparatus to experiment moving in different ways. Alongside this, in PSHE the children have been thinking about the parts of our bodies.

In phonics this week, the children have been recapping phase 2 and 3 from Letters and Sounds. Please click here if you would like to find out more about Letters and Sounds. The children have learnt the new common exception words said and so. The children have been thinking about rhyming ‘ck’ words e.g. pick, hick, lick. Please encourage your children to spot rhymes at home. Rhyming words lends itself to playing some fun games! The children have loved telling us about and writing about their half term holidays.

In maths this week, the children have been continuing to focus on a ‘number of the day’ (11-15) and have been watching the Numberblocks episodes relevant to the number each day.  They have been counting, building towers and selecting the Numicon plates to represent the special number each day. They have also made number sentences to equal the number of the day as well as finding one more and one less! These are made into posters and displayed in each of our classrooms (you may have seen them during open morning). Please click here to find some games that can be played on the computer or a tablet using numbers to 20. If you do this with your child, please send us an observation in the same way as before. This can be added to their ongoing learning diary.

You should have received the next instalment of your child’s learning diary on Monday. If you have not yet got this, please check the junk mail folder. If you still can’t find it, please contact your child’s class teacher.

Thank you to the parents/carers who attended open morning. We are looking forward to seeing you again on Tuesday and Thursday for parents evening.
