Year 1 Home Learning Week 5 (beginning 18.5.20)

Your work last week was fantastic once again!  We can’t quite believe that this is the last week of Term 5! This week we are going to finish our topic of Bristol as our theme. In your work over the last 4 weeks you have found out so much information about our beautiful city. Please let us know via our class emails if you are still having any problems submitting work to our 2 Build a profile but we are hoping that most issues have now been resolved.  Below again is a summary of this week’s learning to act as guidance only and not a strict timetable to follow. Please work with the routines that suit your family best.  We hope it is continuing to bring clarity to the expectations for each week and to see clearly the work that we are encouraging you to photo (3 pieces) to submit  into your 2 Build a Profile platform so that we can celebrate your work and give some more feedback. Remember that other pieces are welcome too, especially things that you are really proud of.

As usual click on the timetable for a pdf version with links to resources. Also for a pdf copy of the blog click here.

English – Reading and Phonics

Daily Reading
Carry on choosing books for reading, mixed up with games and other activities aimed at the level of your child from the Pearson site. As we have said all along, books you have at home or other sites you may also have been using are still fine too. Remember, we are just aiming to fill the gap of our book boxes whilst you are at home. If you would like there is an optional comprehension task below to do one day instead as we have not included one in our main activities this week.
Harder level ComprehensionTask – The RunAway Iceberg
3 levels of difficulty to choose from – How to look after a dog

Daily Phonics
There are just three videos to concentrate on this week again. Choose whether you want to watch a video in its entirety  or break it into parts over the week. The videos are so good to help maintain our core English skills. Use them as best fits with your routines. We have also included a nice game that you may want to choose to play instead in one of your sessions.

English – Writing

Session 1: Listing words starting with the same letter
Learning Objectives:
-Make a list using phoneme knowledge to sound out unknown words.
-Use a capital for the start of each word.(The reason for this will become apparent after watching the powerpoint about acrostic poems).

List words that start with each letter of the word, BRISTOL. Think about all the learning from this term. Think of words connected to Bristol and start with the letters in its name.
E.g. B: Bristol   Brunel  Blaise   Beautiful  Banksy
Look at the powerpoint on the link below about writing an acrostic poem ready for your next session.
What is an acrostic poem?

Session 2: Writing An Acrostic Poem
Learning Objectives:
-I will know that acrostic poems have a topic word hidden in the first letter of each line.
-I can use a capital letter for the start of each new line of my poem.

Use the words from session 1 and all your learning from this term to create an acrostic poem about Bristol. There were examples of how to  layout your poem on session 1 powerpoint. You may want to take today’s session to think about and write each sentence, to then write up neat and decorate in session 3. You may choose to go straight to neat and use the 2 sessions to produce a super poem that is illustrated and decorated. Remember the lovely poems you did and decorated during our ‘Lost Words’ week in school.

Session 3: Writing/Handwriting : Complete your acrostic poem.
Learning Objectives:
-I can ‘publish’ my work for display, using correct formation and the same size of letters.
-I can decorate my written work to add to it’s meaning.

When you have finished it you could put it in a window for passers by to read and also don’t forget to take a picture and send it to us to help celebrate your fabulous efforts.

Session 4: Grammar: Looking at Alphabetical Order.
Learning Objectives:
-I know and can say  the alphabet in order.
-I can order words using their first letters to put them into alphabetical order.

Start by putting the letters from BRISTOL into alphabetical order. You could also do this for your name. Click below if you want to look at an alphabet chart to remind you, or you can sing our song. Next, have a go at the sheet and see how you get on. Really think about your letter formation for your lower and upper case letters as you write. Is there a letter that you still find tricky or maybe reverse? Practice it on it’s own a few times.

Alphabet Order Worksheet

Session 5: Speaking and Listening Activity. Thoughts/discussion and writing linked to PSHE
Learning Objectives:
I can tell you why I appreciate someone who is special to me and express how I feel about them.
As a way of finishing Term 5 we would like you to think about why your family is special to you and tell them. This could be your brother or sister, parents or grandparents. Tell them over the phone or video call. Why are they so special? Then, we’d like you to write about yourself! Why are you special? What makes you special? You don’t need to write much, even just 1 sentence will do. Share this with your teacher on the profile. We are all special and taking the time to think about it and express this to each other is really important. We will collect a collection of sentences that will then say why our class is so special.

Maths

This week we are going to be focusing on Capacity. We will be looking at what capacity means and how we can represent and describe capacity using comparative language. We are going to predict then compare the capacity of different containers before measuring them out and will learn about measuring in millilitres and litres. We will practice by using certain vocabulary to describe capacity such as ‘full, empty, half full, less full, more full, most and least’.

THIS WEEK YOU WILL NEED: Some empty containers, spoons, cups and jugs of various sizes, jars and plastic bottles to work with and some water. Having tall and thin containers or short and wide containers if possible that might have a ‘surprising’ capacity would be good. You may also measure by filling with different materials for example rice, lentils or sand. (To make learning extra fun, you might decide to add some food colouring or glitter to your water to entice your learners!). You will also need a measuring jug to measure millilitres and litres (if possible).

Top Tip: In order to make sure we are measuring the capacity fairly when experimenting, we need to make sure we are filling our containers to the top and measuring from eye level (children’s eye level).

Session 1
Daily Maths fluency-  powerpoint
Main Activity:
Learning Objectives:
-To create a repeating pattern using a rectangle and tessellation.

Using a rectangle shape draw around it to create a repeating pattern, brick wall effect. Look at some of the pictures below. This will be used later in the week to create a Banksy style masterpiece! You can paint, print or colour your bricks, but choose a light colour so you can put an image over the top later. If you don’t have a rectangle shape, look around and see what you could find. You could always draw and cut one out of a cereal packet. You can make your wall as big as you wish!

Session 2: Capacity
Daily Maths Fluency – powerpoint
Main Activity:
Learning Objectives:
-To know that capacity means the amount something can hold.
-Explore language we can use to compare  and ways in which we can measure capacity.

Watch the White Rose video (To find the correct video look in Week 2> Lesson 1 Compare Capacity)
Compare capacity sheet to complete

Session 3: Capacity
Daily Maths Fluency – powerpoint
Main Activity:
Learning Objectives:
-To explore measure in non-standard units.
-To make predictions and to use comparative language to describe the capacity of various different containers. (e.g more than, less than, most, least, full, empty)

Watch White Rose video (Look in Week 1>Lesson 5 Measure Capacity)
Choose your measurement resource e.g sand or water a non-standard unit of measure to measure in (e.g cups or spoons). Experiment using different sized containers and filling to the brim. Can you order your containers predicting which you think will hold the least to the most in order? (remember prediction means ‘your best guess’).
Capacity Estimation Sheet – Complete sheet to record your prediction for each container and the actual amount it can hold after working practically.

Please submit a picture of your containers with a comment about your child’s learning to your child’s 2 Build a profile and their sheet. This could be a quote with some related language, a prediction or a short description of the learning that takes place.
Optional Challenge Activity: Capacity problems

Session 4: Capacity
Daily Maths Fluency – powerpoint slide 4
Main Activity:
Learning Objectives:
-To measure using standard units.
-To read some measurements in millilitres and litres.

Order a selection of containers from biggest to smallest. (using your eye to make your predictions). Fill your containers with water and then pour there contents into a measuring jug to measure their actual capacity. Read how many millilitres or litres your container can hold and record in your table. Find out which holds the least and most. Discover if your predictions were correct!
Order containers by capacity sheet
Optional: Capacity challenge cards reading measurements (1, 2 or 3 star differentiated level of challenge).

Session 5:
Daily Maths fluency- powerpoint slide 5
Main Activity:
Learning Objectives:
– Recap learning on part, part, whole.
– To know that two parts represent one whole.

White Rose video (Look in Summer Term Week 3 – Lesson 1: Part whole relationships number bonds)
The video recaps our learning of cherry stem diagrams to represent two parts being equal to one whole. Scribe number sentences to fit with a part part whole model. You may work with practical resources to assist such as counters and by drawing the diagram on large paper or a mini whiteboard in order to work on a practical and larger scale.

Topic

Session lengths will vary according to each family. We would love to see a photo of a piece of work you do this week. If you create a story book with Purple Mash please let us know and we will be sure to look at it (you will not need to add an additional photo). You may decide to create your Purple Mash story over the May half term week.
Please choose either Sessions 1-5 below OR work on Purple Mash to Create A Story ebook (online drawing).

Create A Story – Ebook Animation Option
Click on the link below where a PDF document will talk you through the task. Please be aware that online books created will be available for the whole class to see and share.

Session 1: Bristol’s world famous artists.
Learning Objective:
-I can explore my ideas and experiences, I can link my work to famous artists. Links with Geography.
Create a Banksy or Aardman inspired mural. If you’d like inspiration have a look at the powerpoint below. Using the repeated pattern wall picture you made in Maths create a piece of graffiti. If you don’t want to paint or draw directly onto your wall you could do it on another piece of paper and cut it out, then put it on your wall. It could be a message to the NHS or perhaps an Aardman character (e.g Shaun the Sheep, Wallace and Gromit)? The choice is yours.

Session 2: Art from other countries.
Learning Objectives:
-I can talk about the ways art makes me think and feel, I am beginning to start to recognise different ways to make a picture.
Links with Geography and History. As you know Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a famous Bristol Engineer who made bridges, ships, tunnels and railways. Brunel needed to draw his ideas before he made them. We are going to explore artists’ pictures of bridges, or architectural structures. If you prefer you could do your own research project to find pictures you would like to work with.
Trm 5 wk 5 Art – See Session 2 in the powerpoint

Session 3: Art in History
Learning Objectives:
– I can produce creative work, I can talk about art linking with history and culture.
Links with Geography and History. Create! Thinking about the pictures you have seen, create your own picture of something architectural, constructed by people.
Trm 5 wk 5 Art See Session 3 in the powerpoint. It links some of our recent learning in one picture.

Session 4: Choose either My Art or Giant Art.

My Art
Learning Objective:
-I can begin to think about evaluating my work
Watch the video. Then think carefully about the art you have made this week. Would you like to make improvements? Ask your grown-up to help you if you would like another go at it.
Trm 5 wk 5 Art – See Session  4 in the powerpoint

OR Giant Art
Learning Objective:
– I can produce creative work.
Use what you can to recreate or make a huge picture. You might use a whole table top or garden. You could use whatever you are allowed to.
Trm 5 wk 5 Art – See Session 4 in the powerpoint

Session 5: Music.
Learning Objective:
-I can use my voice creatively by singing songs, I can listen with concentration to recorded music.
Linked with Geography and History, this week’s music encourages children to learn and perform 2 songs in a familiar and supportive setting. Some children find this harder than others so families may need to sing along together.

  1. Playing for change Don’t Worry Be Happy. You may have learnt this already in which case add clapping in time and polish your performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWXUWepSak4&feature=emb_rel_end You could learn the song and then sing it to grandparents, or friends via Whats app video or with neighbours over the fence.
  2. In line with our Bristol topic, please talk about the importance of the river and the harbour for Bristol. Practice this well known song about sitting on the dock  https://playingforchange.com/dock-of-the-bay-2018/

PE

Dance. Enjoy this family focused song made for you by musicians from around the world. You could have a free style dance. https://playingforchange.com/videos/chanda-mama-2020/

PE. Don’t forget Joe Wicks Pe is on youtube at 9am each weekday morning. This week I have chosen a yoga video that includes the boat pose in the well loved story of Moana in a Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventure  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5y3gCrL_XIM

End of term treats and half term ideas.

We know that there were animals on the SS Great Britain. Did you know in Brunel’s lifetime there was a giraffe that travelled halfway around the world on a boat? Have a look at this wonderful art idea and perhaps make your own giraffe head. The Old Vic Theatre Company in Bristol show us how here.

As a family you might be to watch Zerafa (PG) on the British Film Institute website with a cost to rent at £3.50

You could have a look at the world famous Bristol animators Aardman. Aardman’s facebook page is full of ideas to help children engage with making animation.
