Year 1 Week 1 Term 6 – Home learning (week beginning 1/6/20)

Hope you all had a fantastic Half Term break and enjoyed some outside time with your families. Thanks to all who managed to send some of your wonderful learning to your profile once again before half term. You are all producing some amazing things and having lots of fun in the process.

This week we are going to start on our new topic of Journeys, a topic that the whole school will be working on together.

Below again is a summary of this week’s learning to act as guidance only and not a strict timetable to follow. Please work with the routines that suit your family best.  You should see clearly the work that we are encouraging you to photo (3 pieces) to submit  into your 2 Build a Profile platform so that we can celebrate your work and give some more feedback. Remember that other pieces are welcome to, especially things that you are really proud of. Please do try to send the pieces of work to 2 Build a Profile by Thursday evening so that we have time to mark and respond to it.

English – Reading and Phonics

Carry on choosing books for reading, mixed up with games and other activities aimed at the level of your child from the Pearson site. As we have said all along, books you have at home or other sites you may also have been using are still fine too. Remember, we are just aiming to fill the gap of our book boxes whilst you are at home.

Phonics
There are three videos to concentrate on this week again, with the first being part of the main English sessions. Choose whether you want to watch a video in its entirety or break it into parts over the week. The videos are so good to help maintain our core English skills. Use them as best fits with your routines. Please note we have also suggested 1 video for our first main session of writing this week (see below).

Session 2: Story Prediction From a Front Cover
Learning Objectives:
-To use the information on a front cover and past experiences to help make predictions about a story, setting and characters.
Look at the front over of our new book to introduce our new topic. What do you predict will happen in the story? Who is the character in the boat? Where is it set?  Think, discuss and record your predictions and we will see if you were right later on! This could be just listing words or writing sentences or asking a grown up to record what you think.

Session 3: Writing : Character Thought Bubbles
Learning Objectives:
-After discussion, use information from an illustration to think about the feelings and thoughts of characters in a story.
-To write a sentence in a thought bubble. Connect to how speech may be written. Use a capital and punctuation.
Watch the video of the start of the story. You will notice that it has no written words!! Now look at the first picture in the book more closely. What is going on in the house and outside. What would be in each thought bubble for each person? You can write them in your book if you don’t want to print off the sheet.

Session 4: Writing : Design a special land using ‘Journey’ book as inspiration.
Learning Objectives:
-Write adjectives connected to their own illustration.
-Use ideas from other stories and experiences to create an image connected to a story.
Watch the short video again from session 3. Imagine that you had a pen that could be used to draw and create a magic door like the girl from our story. What would your door look like? Where would it take you to? Draw a picture of your door and then a picture of the place you would end up in when you go through it? Is it magical, squishy, strange, mysterious. Think about the work we have done in school, the land of the dinosaurs that we made our display about, the creatures, plants, colours. You may have other images from other books in your mind that you want to use or just pictures from your imagination! Can you now put some adjectives on your picture to describe the land you have entered? Send a copy of your pictures and words to your profile.

Maths

This week we will be focusing on increasing our fluency and confidence in our number facts. This will include practice of the key skills we have worked on building during term 5 including addition and subtraction within 20 and our number bond knowledge. We will be revisiting part-part whole (the relationship between 3 numbers in a number sentence) and looking at addition and subtraction fact families, as a way of spotting the links and patterns. As before; tens frames, counters, 100 squares and number lines can be used to scaffold children’s learning as appropriate.

There are 3 videos to follow with linked worksheets as our main sessions. (All Videos are linked but can also be found in Whiterose under Year 1- Home learning- week 3 ( this will take you to ‘Summer term week 4 w/b May 4th’). For daily fluency, each day is an interactive resource. Please follow guidance for level of challenge.

This week, we have suggested the worksheet from either session 2 or 3 to be submitted to your child’s 2 Build a Profile for feedback.

Session 1:
Maths Fluency – Bond builder on number gym– please pick up where you left off from the previous time.
Watch number bond video
Write numbers 0-20 on paper and cut up (lay face down) Challenge yourself to find the matching pair to make a number bond to 20. (0-10 instead or previous to 20 if more appropriate for your child).

Session 2 :
Maths Fluency- Number fact families game (addition and subtraction up to 10 and 20)
Main Session: Fact Families
Learning Objectives:
To explore the relationships between a group of numbers, involving both addition and subtraction, working within 20 including zero.
Watch Fact families video.
Pause the video for discussion time with your child (refer back to fact family learning from term 5).
Complete the worksheet.
Option to submit

Session 3 :
Maths Fluency- Smoothie maths game (facts within 10 and 20 including subtraction)
Main Session: Add together and find a part
Learning Objectives:
To identify two parts and a whole
To know that two parts represent a whole
Watch the part, part whole video.
Pause to enable discussion and working out as appropriate. Try to emphasise the relationship between the whole and the component parts. Complete worksheet
Option to submit
Extra Challenge (optional): Fact families reasoning tasks (there are question prompts to help you to encourage children to explain their reasoning and ‘convince’ you!)

Session 4 :
Maths Fluency- Working with tens frames game (steps 3 and 4 fill and add, option to play all)
Main Session: Add on within 20
Learning Objectives:
Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
Watch the video
Pause to enable discussion and working out as appropriate.
(A number line and counters can be used as a practical resource to scaffold learning in this session)
Complete worksheet to do with counting on
Extra Challenge (optional): True or False question (try to get children write down their proof and practise verbally explaining it you)

Session 5 :
Maths Fluency- Purple mash addition and subtraction facts to 20 (with number bonds).
Then revisit an area of learning this week your child would benefit with additional work on. Either fact families, part part whole, number bonds, adding on within 20. Encourage children to work mentally to become fluent and spot links between numbers, however using practical resources to demonstrate this may be beneficial for some children. Please select an option from additional challenges of your choice if your child is secure and seeking extension.

Additional Challenges/Tasks:

Topic

Session 1: PSHE  Resilience – Change is ok!
Learning Objectives:
-I can be hopeful when things are changing
-I know what to do if I’m worried
What things have changed in our lives? (You could just think about this coronavirus time, or go beyond to from when they were babies.)  Make a list or a brainstorm and draw a smiley/ sad/ puzzled/ angry face beside each one. Assure your child that it’s ok to have these different feelings, and really important to talk about them. Point out and encourage the positive things. Have there been some really good things which we could keep on doing (eg going for a family walk or bike ride)?

Many changes happen in our lives, and that’s normal and it’s ok. What makes a difference is how we react to those changes. Remembering things that have changed and noticing and being thankful for the positive things can help us to be hopeful for changes that will come.
You know your child! Each one has had a different experience of this coronavirus time. Some may be more excited about returning to school than they are worried.  Judge how your child is feeling, taking care not to project your own feelings onto them. Above all, do ensure you give them time to talk about their feelings, whatever they may be!
Watch/ listen to a story about what to do if you are worried.
Ruby’s Worry
The Worrysaurus read by the author
The Worrysaurus read by Mrs Brand
A story about going back to school after lockdown.
What things are you worried about? Really listen to your child, and try one of the activities to help them deal with worries.
Activities to help when we are worried.

Session 2: Art  linking with English and PSHE
Learning Objectives:
– I can experiment to create work to express my ideas and experiences.
-I can explore a range of design techniques using colour, texture and line.
We are thinking about expressing our fondness through meaningful mark making, drawing, painting or sculpture.
See the powerpoint Trm 6 Wk 1 Topic Journeys, Session 2.

Session 3: Geography with Art and English

– I can express a curiosity in the world.
-I can use basic geographical language to refer to physical features such as a beach, a forest, a mountain or human features such as a harbour, a castle, a city.
Creating a story about a journey.
See the powerpoint Trm 6 Wk 1 Topic Journeys, Session 2

Session 4: Design Technology with PSHE and English
Learning Objectives:
– I can design a building and communicate my ideas through talking, drawing or model making.
Designing a favourite building (this might be your home or somewhere imaginary).
See the powerpoint Trm 6 Wk 1 Topic Journeys, Session 3

Session 5: PE Adventurous Journeys.
Learning Objectives: I can challenge myself to increase activity PE, I am developing/ perfecting fundamental movement skills
Your child will need access to the action picture cards, either on a screen or printed. Please do save paper and print 4 or more pages on the same side of one piece of paper. Choose bare feet or shoes.
Trm 6 Wk 1 PE Physical action cards

Take an imaginary journey using your body! Use the PE cards to choose what activity to do next as you create a story. This could be on the spot, in your home, in the park or at school. When you choose a movement card be sure to say how it fits into the story. For example”One day Charlie was walking over the blackdown hills (use the walking card), he could see majestic Oak trees and tall, shimmering Birch trees on the next hill. Charlie kept walking until he saw a beautiful butterfly. He started to run to try to see it close up. He ran down the hill and up the hill. He was running so fast he overtook the butterfly and…”
Can you challenge yourself to use each card twice? Three times? Have fun!

Daily PE: Make sure you keep fit and healthy. If you aren’t running, cycling or walking with your family please do tune into Joe Wicks on youtube for a great workout.

Optional extras could be…
Dance: Sadlers Wells dance all about shapes
Geography: Take a journey to the coast/ eg virtual tour around giants causeway with sound
Computing: Make animation using StopMotionStudio app. It’s free to download for Apple and Android and really easy to use but a parent will be needed! Have a look at this 7 minute video together. As we are focusing on journeys and things or people that are special to us this perhaps you could use small toys going on a journey. Or perhaps you could cut out and use the letters of your name…or perhaps you have a better idea!
