Year 1 Home Learning Week 4 (commencing 22.6.20)

This week we continue with our  topic of Journeys, a topic that the whole school is  working on together. Year 1 and 2 will continue following a lot of the same themes, allowing for consolidation of objectives or a chance to really stretch yourself further with your learning as we get ourselves ready for transition to Year 2 over the coming weeks. Below again is a summary of this week’s learning to act as guidance only and not a strict timetable to follow. Please continue to  work with the routines that suit your family best. We do ask though, if your child is returning to school over the coming weeks that you do not complete work from the days suggested below on the days your child is in school as, in school  we will be following the timetable more rigidly. You should see  clearly the work that we are encouraging you to photo (3 pieces) to submit  into your 2 Build a Profile platform so that we can celebrate your work and give some more feedback. Work completed in school will be submitted by the teachers in the same way.  Remember that other pieces are welcome too, especially things that you are really proud of.

This week you will also notice on our timetable and in our topic section we have changed it a bit to include a short daily PSHE/wellbeing activity instead of doing one longer session of this type each week. This is to mirror more closely what we are doing with the children that are back in school, as we are aware that this is something of huge importance at the moment. It is not intended to be a long activity, but is hoped it will be a short activity to give you a chance to take 10 minutes out of your day to focus on your well being.
Please find a pdf of the blog here.

English – Reading and Phonics

Daily Reading
Carry on choosing books for reading, mixed up with games and other activities aimed at the level of your child from the Pearson site. As we have said all along, books you have at home or other sites you may also have been using are still fine too. Don’t forget to let your teachers know via your class email if you feel you need the next level.

Daily Phonics and Spelling
We will carry on with the link to phonics  for learning and consolidation. Choose whether you want to watch a video in its entirety  or break it into parts. The videos are so good to help maintain our core English skills. Continue to use them as best fits with your routines. These are consolidation of taught sounds. As last week, if you feel your child is secure with these sounds then please spend more time on spelling.      .

English – Writing

Session 1 : Grammar
Learning Objectives:
-Form and write a question mark correctly.
-To know when it is appropriate to use a question mark.

Using question marks and questioning words to complete either of the below tasks.
Question mark easier sheet
Question mark harder sheet

Session 2: Letters to children from Reception Classes
Learning Objectives:
-To respond to questions with a written answer.
-To write a letter.

Write letters and pictures to Reception children about  year 1. Below is a list of questions that the Reception children have come up with for Year 1 children to answer. You could answer 1 or more of these as well as telling them other things. Think of the questions you had about Year 2 last week. That could help you think about what else they might want to find out. Year 2 are going to be busy answering your questions and writing you letters too!
Send these into 2BAP and Class Email.

Session 3: Describe a setting from the story.
Learning Objectives:
-To know what a setting is in relation to a story.
-To use adjectives to describe the setting of a story.
Watch the final video with Mrs Fricker finally reaching the end of our book. Choose one of the settings in the story. Pause on your chosen page. How would you describe it? Watch the video which has some closer images of the text which will help with your writing. Use the settings description checklist to help.
Reduced Challenge: Choose a picture and a setting from any part of the book and list the adjectives to describe it. Use some of these together in a sentence to describe the setting.
Challenge: Choose a picture and a setting from any part of the book and list the adjectives to describe it. Use these adjectives to write a description of the setting, including the colours, mood of the place and the special things around.
If your sentence or sentences were read by someone else would they be able to find the picture/setting you were describing, just from your description?

Session 4: Where did the magic red pen come from?
Learning Objectives:
-To write a prequel to the ‘Journey’ story.
Look at the first picture of the book on the picture below.
Can you spot a purple pen? Who is holding it? Talk through your ideas. Then think about how the little girl came to have her red pen.Where has it come from? When and how did it become magical?Talk about your ideas.
Reduced Challenge: Make a poster about the magic red pen. Include where it came from and why and how it is magical. Your poster could be advertising them for sale in a magic shop. How much would it cost? How would you tell people about it’s magical powers?
Challenge: Write a prequel to this story that explains where the magic red pen came from. Who owned it before the girl? Who made it? Why does it have special powers?

Session 5: Comprehension
If you want to use this session for extra phonics time, to complete or watch a video then please do. Please click below if you would like to complete a comprehension. Remember that there are 3 levels, choose 1 to answer. You do not need to do all 3. This week they are about Seaside Holidays

Maths

Session 1:
Snappy maths
– as the last couple of weeks how many can you get through in 3 minutes?
Snappy maths addition and subtraction within 10 (will be suitable for most as the idea is to do it as fast as possible!)
Snappy maths subtraction within 20 (challenge)
Then games on numbergym and other games from last weeks blog as suit your child.

Session 2:
Daily fluency slide
Learning Objectives:
– To know that addition and subtraction are inverse operations, e.g. If 2+3=5 then 5-3=2 and 5-2=3.
Main
– Watch the 2 videos below, found on the BBC bitesize website, extra information about the videos are below:
Video 1: Watch the video explaining that 3+5=5+3. Please remind children that we call this ‘commutativity’ as this is the vocabulary we had been teaching in school, but the word is not actually used in the video.
Video 2: This video explains that addition and subtraction are the opposite of each other, we would also tell children the proper term for this is “inverse” (but would explain that it means they are the opposite).
Link to BBC bitesize videos

Addition and subtraction as inverse sheet – please use counters/objects to help children work through the problems.
The first question has been filled in on the sheet as an example. There is also a large part-part-whole diagram that you can print out (link below) and use with counters or objects to help children visualise, like in the image below.
Part-part-whole diagram visual aid

Challenge: Fact families game – this game is similar to skill they have been practising, however it also reminds children of the fact that it doesn’t matter where the equals sign goes it just means that either side is the same (e.g. you can write 2+4=6 and 6=2+4)
Extra Challenge: Karate Cats game – a good challenge if your child is nearly able to recall addition and subtraction facts up to 20. This would be above what we would expect though in Year 1 so please don’t feel that your child should be able to do this (if they still wanted to have a go they could have counters/objects to do it with as they play, but would probably need help with the reading and variety of questions)

Session 3:
Daily fluency slide
Learning Objectives:
– To know that addition and subtraction are inverse operations, e.g. If 2+3=5 then 5-3=2 and 5-2=3.
There are 2 possible options for today, depending on how your child got on with yesterdays work, this is often tricky for children, so may well need revisiting:
Option 1: Part-part-whole cards. Further practise of recording part-part-whole diagrams as addition and subtraction number sentences. Print the part-part-whole cards (you do not need to complete them all!) and cut out the ones that best suit your child to work with. Stick them into their books and next to them record 4 ways of writing the diagrams as number sentences (usually 2 addition and 2 subtraction number sentences unless they involve 0 or duplicates of the same number), like yesterday’s sheet.
Option 2: Addition and Subtraction as inverse Sheet 2 (the first sheet, out of the 3): Following the same concept of addition and subtraction as inverses, however uses different representations for children to explore. Answers available too.
Challenge: The second and third sheets from option 2 would make good extensions.

Session 4:
Daily fluency slide
Learning Objectives:
– To solve missing number addition questions within 20, using a numberline or counters.
Powerpoint explaining how to solve missing number problems using a numberline.
Missing number Addition within 20 Sheet– complete these using a numberline as shown in the powerpoint.
Numberline – to print and use to help complete the questions.
Reduced challenge: use counters/objects and a tens frame to make it more practical. Ideally 2 different colours so they can visually see the 2 parts that make up the whole (the answer)
Challenge: Hit the button game. (In the menu select Missing numbers + and -)

Session 5:
Revisit any areas as needed for more practise or have a go at any of the challenges.
Play games on Numbergym and any of the games suggested above. Particularly recommended games:
Bond builder on Numbergym
Hit the button – any of the of the Number bonds games (within 10 and 20) or the doubles game (within 20)
In the bag – missing number game on Numbergym
