Year 2 Home Learning – Term 6, Week 6 (w.b. 6.7.20)

Hello Year 2 and welcome to Week 6 home learning.

We cannot believe it is the penultimate week of term! Your work last week was amazing once again, you are really making us proud right to the end! Thank you for everything you are sending in, it really means a lot to see you working so hard at home. You are all incredibly resilient, just like the tortoise and your junior schools are so lucky to have you next year.

This week we are going to ask you to do a couple of jobs for us that we would like you to bring along with you to our celebration on the 15th July. We cannot wait to see you all!

Below again is a summary of this week’s learning to act as guidance only and not a strict timetable to follow. Please work with the routines that suit your family best.  We hope it is bringing some clarity to our expectations and showing clearly the work that we are encouraging you to photo (3 pieces). The photos should be submitted to 2 Build a Profile platform (email inbox@2buildaprofile.com), as well as to your class email, so that we can celebrate your work and give some feedback. Remember that other pieces are welcome to, especially things that you are really proud of.

The timetable can be found here.

All resources for this week can be found here.

English

Reading

Daily reading: Carry on choosing books for reading, mixed up with games and other activities aimed at the level of your child from the Pearson site. Books you have at home or other sites you may also have been using are still fine too. Don’t forget to let your teachers know via your class email if you need more books or that your child needs the next level. There is also another digital copy of ‘First News’ for you to enjoy as well as a newspaper comprehension and a crossword.

Reduced challenge: If you find your child is struggling with their reading it may be worth revisiting some of the phonics work from Year 1. This is great for spelling as well as reading. We highly recommend these videos from one of Letters and Sounds English hub.

Reading Task: Have a look at this lesson about finding information in a text and writing creatively. Here is a reading comprehension about deep sea explorer too. Choose the level of challenge to suit you.

Spelling and Grammar

For your daily spelling this week have a go at some of these  spelling practise sheets.

Learning objective: To use and identify verbs.

Time to refresh our memory of verbs. You are going to identify these ‘doing words’ in sentences and use them in your own writing. Follow the link.

Writing

Task 1: Writing a Memory

In preparation for our leavers celebration on the 15th July we would like you to write down your favourite memory from being in school this year. It could be your favourite bit of learning, a funny incident or a school trip. If you are having trouble remembering that far back in the midst of time we suggest looking back through some of the old blog posts for Year 2 from this year. Hopefully, that will jog some memories! Publish your memory in your best handwriting and bring it with you to the celebration.  If you would like to, you will be given a chance to read your memory out to the rest of the class. If you’d prefer not to that’s ok too!

Task 2: Spreading my Wings booklet

Have a go at the ‘Spreading my wings Year 2 to Year 3’ booklet. Bring them with you on the 15th and we will give them to your new teacher so that they can find out a bit more about you.

Task 3: Pantoum Poem

This week we would like you to write a Pantoum poem about something or someone important to you. A pantoum poem has 4 verses based on 8 sentences rearranged in a particular order:

Verse 1 = 1,2,3,4

Verse 2 = 2,5,4,6

Verse 3 = 5,7,6,8

Verse 4 = 7,3,1,8

Trust me, it is easier than it sounds and very effective!

First write 8 simple sentences about your chosen subject. Then reorder your sentences as above. There is a template in the resource folder to help you do this and an example

Reduced challenge: Write out the simple sentences on strips of paper and have a go at rearranging them physically. Read your poem out loud as you go.

Extra Challenge: Publish your poem in your best handwriting and decorate the border. Perform your poem to your family.

Maths

Lessons 1 and 2  will use instructions from a video tutorial. Before commencing the video ensure that your child has everything they need, including:

  • the correct ‘Flashback4’ sheet (to be completed before the tutorial starts);
  • the question worksheet (the answer sheet is also available for marking);
  • a pencil;
  • a workbook or piece of paper to work on.

The tutorial will ask your child to pause the video at certain points. Please ensure that they know how to do this if you are not able to sit with them. The question sheet should be completed after the tutorial (please note these are accessed through these plans and can no longer be clicked on next to the tutorial).

Daily Fluency: For tasks 1 and 2, the Flashback 4 sheet should be completed before the tutorial. Three additional fluency tasks are available here, this week they focus on making equal groups and odd and even numbers.

Task 1 – Shape

Learning Objective: To recognise the properties of 2D shapes.

All resources are here.

Watch the tutorial here.

You will need the Flashback4 Fluency Sheet, the worksheet. Please go through the answers with your child after they have completed the tutorial.

Extension: have a go at the ‘diving into mastery’ 2D shape challenges here.

Task 2 – 3D shape

Learning Objective: To recognise the properties of 3D shapes

All resources are here.

Watch the tutorial here.

You will need the Flashback4 Fluency Sheet and the worksheet. Please go through the answers with your child after they have completed the tutorial.

Extension: Try the ‘Diving into Mastery’ challenges here.

Task 3 – Skeleton Shapes

This problem helps children to understand the properties of shapes concentrating on edges and vertices. It also helps in promoting discussion and experimentation. It is best if they have 3D shapes to help with the problem but you can use everyday objects like a dice or a book. Or you can draw the shapes. Even better if you have clay (playdough or similar) and straws or small sticks.
