Reception News – Term 1 Week 3

What a fantastic start to Term 1 in Henleaze Infant School! In Reception, the children have been having fun and settling into school. They have been playing in our outside environment, as well as in their new classrooms. All of the classes have enjoyed making up their own class rules, based on our whole school rules.

This week, we have launched our ELLI topic. ELLI stands for “Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory” and supports the children’s learning journey throughout Henleaze Infant and Junior school. Studying the characters in depth, supports the children’s understanding of the ways in which we learn and supports them to learn the vocabulary to talk about how they are learning. To find out more about ELLI, please look at the displays in the Reception corridor or follow this link http://www.henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Elli-Our-Learning-Journey-Sept-19.pdf.

Each animal will be introduced using a story. In reception this week, we have been focusing on the Owl character. Owls are aware of their feelings, thoughts and ideas for doing things differently in their learning. They have a toolkit of strategies they use for different situations and they take time out to think about them. The children have loved reading and talking about the well-known story ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. The owl character helps the children to think about planning their learning before doing it. We have been talking to the children about what being an owl means to them as learners and how they can use strategies to support their own learning and development. We have immersed ourselves in the topic and taken part in lots of exciting activities, including swooping like owls in the hall and finding out the weight of feathers. The children have made and painted owls in different ways for a display in the school hall. We hope you will be able to come and see their wonderful work as you join us for the EYFS curriculum evening on Tuesday 24th September at 7pm.
