Celebrations

We have been so impressed with our Year 2’s this week for working like real life engineers when creating their Lunar space rovers. They applied their new measuring skills to make the axels the right length and worked creatively to problem solve when building the models.

English

Reading:

It is wonderful to see some completed sides of bookmarks this term. This shows your commitment to reading regularly at home and will be celebrated with certificates!

We will continue with guided reading and activities linked to reading skills. We are really interested in sharing examples of information about SPACE. If you come across an article/ information page/ news page that would be of interest and is suitable to be shared with the class -please send it in!

We are placing greater emphasis on teaching specific aspects of grammar this term. These key building blocks of English will be combined with our weekly  spelling lesson and also feature in our daily writing warm ups.

Writing:

In our writing this week we will be writing our own newspaper reports to do with our new text ‘The Way Back Home’. We are going to look at all the different features we need to use and over the week use these skills before we plan our report on Friday. We will be learning how to use commas in a list, using apostrophes for possession and where to use an exclamation mark.If you have any newspaper reports about space then please send these in so we can explore them.

Maths

In maths this week we will move onto measuring volume and capacity. The children will measure volume and capacity in millilitres and litres. We are looking forward to getting the measuring jugs and At the end of the week the children will learn about temperature and how to measure it. To help contextualise the children’s learning, you could ask your children to come food shopping with you and look at the capacity of any liquids you buy.

Our learning objectives for the week are:

  • operations with mass
  • compare volume and capacity
  • measure in mililitres
  • measure in litres
  • temperature

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

This week we will be evaluating our lunar space rovers. You can help children understand the evaluation process at home by talking about well known inventions and how they were not designed and made straight away: they had to be evaluated and improved. In school we will be using the example of the Dyson vacuum cleaner. In Science (and linked to our learning on the RSPB birdwatch) we will be further exploring animal survival and how animals do this through hibernation and migration. We will mostly be looking at animals in the UK but will touch on species in the wider world such as bears.

We will also be starting our new music unit this week, focusing on famous musicians through time. We will start off by listening and responding to music from the Renaissance era verbally and through dance.

Religion and World Views

In R + WV we are thinking about the big question, why is Jesus important to Christians? This week we continue to add to our zigzag miracles book.
