Reception – Term 1, Week 5

  • We are aware of some issues with families not receiving emails from school. We are working hard to resolve these issues. Please click here to view the newsletters. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you have not received an email from Tapestry asking you to activate your account.
  • Please find the lunch menu by clicking here.
  • Please use the school calendar to find up-coming dates. Reception parents are invited to watch a phonics lesson in their child’s class on Wednesday 16th October 2024.
  • We have an inset day on Friday 4th October 2024 so no children will attend school on this day.
  • If you have any pick up arrangements (besides parents collecting), please email your child’s class teacher at least 48 hours in advance or speak to them on the door in the morning. If it is an emergency and you have a change of collection arrangements within the school day, please phone the school office as teachers do not access their emails within the school day.
  • Daisy Class email – daisy@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk
  • Buttercup Class email – buttercup@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

Well done to the children for completing their first full time week! They have been very busy getting to know each other and playing in all the different spaces in and outdoors. They have particularly enjoyed learning about owls and making their own craft owls.

This week, we will be learning about the ELLI changing and adapting chameleon

Communication and Language

Our key text for the next 2 weeks is The Mixed-up Chameleon by Eric Carle. This week, we will be listening to the story and retelling the main events.

We will begin our class ‘All About Me Box’ (see Religion and Worldviews) giving children the opportunity to talk about things which are special for them, listen to others, and ask questions.

Word of the week: blending

We will be teaching the Makaton signs for some emotions:

Physical development

We will be beginning Write Dance this week which supports the children’s gross and fine motor skills through story, dance and drawing.

Literacy

In our Phonics sessions this week, we will learn the graphemes (letter shapes) which correspond with the phonemes (sounds) g, o, c and k. We will also learn the common exception word the (these are frequently-used words which do not follow the phonics we have learned so far.)

Each child will draw a picture of their family along with any letter shapes they may know eg from their name.

Maths

This week, we will compare amounts of objects, size and mass. The children will also have a go at making up their own sorting rules.

Understanding the World

We will be using the story The Mixed Up Chameleon to inspire children to ask questions about chameleon’s, why do they have bulging eyes? Why do they change colour? We will use books and websites to find out answers to these questions and have a go at making our own camouflage animals.

Expressive arts and Design

We will be using Brusho and wax crayons to create pictures of chameleons.

Religion and Worldviews

This week, we will be introducing the class ‘All About Me Box’. At some point over the coming weeks, it will be your child’s turn to take the box home and bring it back the next day with some items/ photos which are special for them, and which they would like to show to their class and talk about. (The box will come with instructions). This not only helps us get to know one another, whilst developing each child’s sense of being unique, but also practises speaking and listening skills.
