Reception – Term 3, Week 1

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Wishes 2023 | WishesMsg
  • We are looking forward to seeing the children again on Tuesday 7th January 2025. Monday 6th January is an inset day – no children in school.
  • Please alert your child’s class teacher when your child has filled up one side of their bookmark.
  • We have sent out Term 2 of your child’s learning diary on Tapestry. Please celebrate the learning your child has been doing in school with them by sharing the observations.
  • Please find the lunch menu by clicking here.
  • Please use the school calendar to find up-coming dates (including our Nativity performance and carol service).
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

What a fun-filled week at school!  On Monday afternoon, we went to see our friends at Claremont to be an audience for the dress rehearsal of their Reception Christmas performance. The children enjoyed moving around the classrooms and looking in the 6 boxes for Christmas in a box on Tuesday morning, learning about the Christian story of Christmas. On Wednesday, they loved Christmas lunch and parties, including a pantomime with lots of special guests! On Thursday, we all got into the festive spirit at St Peters church for our carol service.

Please send us a photo of a special place where you might go to celebrate as a family, For example this could be: at home for a birthday, Christmas or Hanukkah; a party venue; a wedding venue; a place of worship. We will be looking at these during our Religion and Worldviews lesson in Week 1.

You can also send us any moments that you feel are significant in your child’s learning or want to share with your child’s class teachers.

For Term 3, our topic will be ‘Where I live’. During this topic we will be inviting members of the community to talk to the children about the role they play. We will be using a few key texts over the term, starting with Henry’s Map by David Elliot.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We are going to be discussing why we have rules in our session this week.

Communication and Language

Our key text will be Henry’s Map. We will be supporting children in their communication skills by asking questions about the book, and encouraging them to be curious and ask questions of their own.

Word of the week: community

Makaton:         together                more

Our friends at Claremont taught us this song with Makaton signing.

Physical development

In PE this term we are still focusing on the fundamentals of PE. In lesson 1 we will be imagining we are at the circus, developing our balancing skills.

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will be learning the graphemes/ phonemes: ow, oi, ear, air

And the common exception words: are, my

We will practise blending phonemes to read, and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Maths

This week, we will be thinking about mass. The children will be comparing the weight of objects and maths resources (e.g. Numicon pieces).

Understanding the World

We will be using our text of the week Henry’s Map to learn about maps and their purpose. We will be exploring creating our own maps, either imaginary or a place they know- for example their bedroom, garden or classroom.

Expressive arts and Design

We will be beginning our music curriculum this week, starting with the topic Handa’s Surprise. We will be learning how to clap to the beat and keep the rhythm of a song all about fruit!

Religion and Worldviews

Our new Big Question for terms 3+4 is “Why are some times special?” We will begin by talking about places where we might go to celebrate as a family (birthdays, festivals, weddings…including places of worship.)
