Reception – Term 3, Week 5

  • DT this week – During week 5, we will be building a model using cardboard boxes. We would really appreciate it if each child could bring in a couple of boxes on Monday to add to our collection.
  • Please alert your child’s class teacher when your child has filled up one side of their bookmark.
  • In the final week before Christmas, we sent out Term 2 of your child’s learning diary on Tapestry. Please celebrate the learning your child has been doing in school with them by sharing the observations.
  • Please find the lunch menu by clicking here.
  • Please use the school calendar to find up-coming dates.
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

The children have loved learning about Chinese New Year this week. They have made dragon masks and have been using chopsticks for fine motor activities. The children also loved going on a walk around the local area spotting places that are important to the community.

The focus this week is Maths. We would like you to go on a hunt around your home for objects that you can order by length. Collect at least 5 and order them from shortest to longest. Can you find any items that are the same length? Please send us a photograph of them in length order. We will ask your child to talk through what they found and use the language short, shorter, long, longer and the same length.

You can also send us any moments that you feel are significant in your child’s learning or want to share with your child’s class teachers. Click the links below to find out how to add observations from different devices.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This week the children will be competing in races, egg sack and skipping races. They will be learning to develop their resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge.

Communication and Language

Our focus text will continue to be Clean Up!

We always encourage the children to engage in story times and non-fiction books in these ways:

Listen to and talk about stories to build familiarity and understanding.

Ask questions to find out more and to check they understand what is being said.

Articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences.

Connect one idea or action to another using a range of connectives.

Describe some events in detail.

Word of the Week: occupation

Physical development

The children will be developing their hopping skills this week whilst being at the farm!

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will be revisiting the graphemes/ phonemes: y, z, zz, qu

And the common exception words: we, be

We will practise blending phonemes to read, and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Writing:  We will be using our phonics learning to write simple sentences about our local walk.

Maths

This week, we will be learning about measure. We will be looking at length and use the language short and long. We will also be finding out about height, using the language tall and short. On Wednesday, we will take part in a whole class investigation to find our who has the shortest and longest feet!

Understanding the World

We will be identifying and discussing the different technology we might see people using in the community to help with their jobs, for example a bus driver using a ticket machine or a postal worker using GPS.

Expressive arts and Design

In DT this week the children will be using the story Clean Up! As inspiration for making something new out of a piece of old cardboard recycling.

Religion and Worldviews

Continuing our big question: “Why are some times special?” We will be thinking about wedding celebrations including a variety of faiths and cultures.
