Reception – Term 5, Week 1

  • Please alert your child’s class teacher when your child has filled up one side of their bookmark.
  • Please find the lunch menu by clicking here
  • Please use the school calendar to find up-coming dates.
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

We have been so impressed with the children’s writing this week. They have been re-writing the story of Handa’s Surprise and some have managed to write the whole story. Alongside this, we enjoyed an Easter assembly with Simon from St Peters church.

The focus this week is PSED. During our PSHE lessons this week, we will be thinking about how we all have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways. We would like you to send in a photograph of a time your child has celebrated (e.g. a birthday, Eid, Christmas, Easter). During our lesson, we will look at the photos and ask your child to talk about what and how they celebrated, so please talk to them about it so they can tell the class about it.

You can also send us any moments that you feel are significant in your child’s learning or want to share with your child’s class teachers. Click the links below to find out how to add observations from different devices.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This term, we will be thinking about building relationships. This week, we will think about how we all have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways. We will also think about the perspectives of others in the class.

Communication and Language

Book of the week: Mrs Noah’s Garden

The particular words we will be focusing on from the book this week are: Vocabulary focus: clung, ancient, shorts and weaving.

We will read the story multiple times to the children. The first time the children will enjoy it and echo read some sections. The second time, they will be taking part in some drama. We will be questioning the children about the story and asking them to describe some of the events in detail.

Physical development

In PE this week, we will be starting gymnastics. They will be learning to create short sequences using shapes, balances and travelling actions.

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will learn Phase 4 words with adjacent consonants: sk, st, ct, pt, xt

And the common exception words: some, they, come

We will practise blending phonemes to read, and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Writing: This week, the children will be writing a couple of sentences about what they did in the Easter holiday.

Maths

This week in maths children will be verbally counting beyond 20, playing counting games and using a number square to spot missing numbers up to 20. They will also be practising their quick recall of number bonds to 5.

Understanding the World

We will be planting seeds and watching them grow, making observations over time. The children will learn about the basic structure of flowering plants and trees. We will talk about the conditions they need to grow. Over the term, we will watch them grow (hopefully!).

Religion and Worldviews

We will be thinking about the big question ‘How should we live our lives?’. This week the children will be thinking about how what they do affects other people.

Expressive arts and Design

We will start our new music topic learning about pitch. This week, the children will learn how to discriminate between changes in pitch, recognising high and low sounds. They will also use actions to demonstrate pitch and use their voice to explore high and low sounds.
