Year 1 Learning Week 1 Term 5

Welcome back! We hope you had an enjoyable break. We will be having a maths learn-along next week, see below for details.

On Monday 28th April you are invited to a ‘Maths Learn-along’. This will take place at approximately 9am straight after drop off in the morning similar to we did for phonics (we will just need to take the children in to register them first).

The focus for this has been chosen to be multiplication across the whole school. In Year 1 the introduction of multiplication might look different to what you expect as we introduce the concept as ‘repeated addition’ so that children understand the concept behind multiplication before we mention multiplication and times tables.

Tuesday 22nd April – back to school (Monday 21st April Bank Holiday)
Monday 28th April – Year 1 maths learn-a-long – come in and see how we teach the beginnings of multiplication in maths
Friday 2nd May – School Closed – INSET day
Monday 5th April – Bank holiday
Friday 16th May – Year 1 trip to the SS Great Britain.
Saturday 17th May – May Fair

Phonics

Reading
This week we will be reading the story Goram and Ghyston the Bristol Giants. We will be acting out the story as well as discussing if the ending is a happy one or not.

Writing
We will thinking of words to describe the main characters in the story and will be writing character profiles to describe one of the characters. We will be challenging ourselves to use the conjunction ‘and’ to extend these sentences.

This week we are beginning our multiplication topic. We’ll practise counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, learning how to make and add equal groups and record this using repeated addition, like below.

PE: We are staring a gymnastics unit this term. This week we will be exploring different ways of travelling.

Science: This week we will be completing a science assessment and seeing what plant knowledge we have remembered from last term.

Computing – We are looking at coding and how to  give the computer a specific set of instructions (algorithms) to create  animations on purple mash.

PSHE: We will be learning  about what rules are, why they are needed, and why different rules are needed in different situations’
