Thank you so much for your support at Sports Morning last week – the children did so well!
This week week we will be learning about money – please see the maths section below to find out how you can support with this.
Diary dates
Please use the school calendar to find up-coming dates. There are some key dates below:
Monday 30th June – Open afternoon (after school). An opportunity for you and your child to visit their new classroom and look at their books/work this year.
Wednesday 16th July – Belonging day – see information below
Tuesday 22nd July – Last day of the school year.
Belonging day at Henleaze Infant School
Based on the success of last year’s cultural week, we will be hosting ‘Belonging day’ in our school on Wednesday 16th July. There will be a day of activities in classes and year groups that celebrate who we are and how we belong to different communities. Children can wear home clothes and traditional cultural dress may be included in this.
Key events:
-After school language share competition
-Class food share (during school hours)
-Multi-lingual library donation drop
How parents and carers can support:
Sign up to the food share sheets in the classrooms . If you have a particular food or dish (home made or bought) that your family enjoys at home and may be part of your culture or heritage, you are welcome to bring this in. We ask that NO NUTS are included in any dish and if your dish is homemade, that you provide a list of allergens. Class teachers use packaging on bought food to identify allergens. Please do not feel that you have to provide 30 portions of the same item! Small ‘tasters’ are great or please pair up with another family if you want to bring something bigger.
Previous examples of food share include:
-Sweetcorn fritters (originating from Jamaica)
-Gingerbread biscuits (originating from the Netherlands)
-Pizza slices (originating from Italy)
-Shortbread bites (originating from Scotland)
If you have any queries, please just ask the class teacher.
Volunteer to read a story or teach a song to your child’s class in a different language:
At Henleaze Infants, we are passionate about celebrating our cultures and heritage. We would love to hear stories in home languages and find out more about about songs and traditions from around the world. Please email daffodil@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk if you can come in and share a story or a song from home at 8.50am.
Make a contribution to our Multi-Lingual library:
Do you have children’s books in different languages? If so, we will gladly accept donations of good quality children’s books. Please do pop the language it is written in, in the inside cover and which family it is from. There will be a box outside the school office for these to go in.
After-school ‘Meet and Greet’ competition:
On the main playground after school, there will be a stall where, if you can come and say ‘Hello!’ in 3 different languages, we will enter your name in a prize draw to win a bilingual storybook!
With thanks,
Mrs Hibbard and Mrs Brand

Reading
We will be continuing to look at the text There’s a Rang-tan in My Bedroom this term.
Writing
This week we will be using our text to look at what the settings are of stories and how an author might describe this. We will then be writing a list of adjectives to help us get ready for writing our own setting descriptions.
Maths
This week we will learning about money. We will be learning what the different coins look like and notes.
Support at home:
Giving your child opportunities to handle coins (as we become increasingly ‘cash free’ these opportunities don’t come as naturally). Talking about the different coin values, most more modern coins don’t have the value written on as a number anymore so it is more difficult for children to remember. Some key facts that will aid children with the coin recognition:
-Bronze coins have the lowest value, then silver then the gold and silver ones.
-There are lots of numbers that we don’t have a coin for, e.g. there is no 3p coin
-When making amounts larger than ten we would use our tens and ones knowledge – 1p, 2p and 5p are all made up of ones and the 10p, 20p and 50p are tens. So if we want to make 23p we would start by thinking how we make the 2 tens and then the 3 ones.
Children love big numbers but it is often the smaller amounts that are harder to make for them, e.g. 7p can’t be made of 6 and 1 (because there is no 6p coin)
