Year 2 – Week 3, Term 1

Thank you to those that were able to attend the meet the teacher sessions this week. Here are notes from the session. The children have done really well with their first full week in school – they should be very proud.

Diary dates

Tuesday 9th September – Welcome to Year 2 meeting and reminders about supporting reading and phonics with your child at home. 2:55pm in your child’s classroom. For those unable to make it slides will be made available.
Tuesday 16th September – Author visit (see email – the day was wrong originally and Tues 16th is correct)
Friday 26th September – INSET day – school closed to children.
Tuesday 7th October – Phonics learn along – an opportunity to see how phonics is taught (9:00-9:30am)
Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd October – Parents evenings
Friday 24th October – End of Term 1. Non uniform day. Contributions to FHIS.

English

Phonics: revision of graphemes taught in Year 1 but with a focus on spelling

Writing
We will be focusing on the fundamental skills of sentence structure, in particular full stops and capital letters.
We will be learning about how a sentence must contain a subject (noun) and a verb to complete.

Reading
We will be reading finishing reading our text Grandad’s Island with a focus on inference skills this week.

Maths

To partition numbers to 100
To be able to recognise tens and ones within a 2 digit number
To recognise the intervals that a numberline is counting in (is it counting in 1s or 10s and is it counting forwards or backwards). 

To estimate where numbers belong on a number line.

Wider Curriculum

Science: ‘Living things and their habitats’. To identity whether something is a living thing using MRS GREN. To know that things that are non-living can either be dead or never alive.
R+WV: We will be introducing the idea of ‘Respectful RWV’ and talking about how it is important to respect differences between different beliefs and worldviews.
History: How did the fire start? Why did the fire spread so quickly?
Art: To create concentric shape art using secondary colours.
Computing: To make music digitally using 2 Sequence. To explore, edit and combine sounds from preset sounds. To create their own tune using.
PE: We will starting our fundamental movement skills unit.
