Willow: Back to School Information for Parents and Carers
Here is some useful information if you were unable to make the back to school meetings.
Willow Class:
Class teachers are Mrs Hibbard (Mon-Wed) and Miss Eskell (Wed PM-Fri)
Each day your child should bring to school:
- Book bag which includes their reading book, reading record, reading bookmark, library book and reading for pleasure book.
- A bottle of water.
- Appropriate clothing for the weather e.g. sunhat/ rain jacket.
- -PE kit to be left in school
Any absence/ illness/ URGENT safeguarding information (including pick ups) must to go to the school office ONLY:
The best place to find out information about learning or anything relative to school is via the website. We update the Y1 blog weekly with information about the coming week’s learning and any important information. You may occasionally get School Comms from the Y1 team too. There will often be posters on the classroom windows from FHIS. Please look out for these.
We thank you in advance for your understanding that the class email is not regularly checked due to class teaching taking priority. We will do our best to get back to you promptly (it may take up to 5 working days for a response). Please catch us on the door if you can.

Learning in Year 1:
Reading books: Book bags must be brought in daily as we change books on different days throughout the week. Please encourage your child to put them in their drawer as part of their morning routine. Book bags should contain:
-Reading record (and Read for the Stars book mark). Please make a short comment after each daily read. Commitment to reading at home will be monitored.
-School reading book
-A reading for pleasure book (from our class book corner)
-Your child will also be able to bring a library book home each week. We visit the library on Thursday afternoons. This is usually our book changing day too.
Reading in school
We read with the children in school each week.
This will be a mixture of individual 1:1 reading or group reads. As children become increasingly fluent readers
Phonics interventions: children will have these if needed. Support is designed to be rapid and responsive to meet the needs of the individual child-we won’t formally notify you of support given, but may discuss at parents’ evenings. If we feel the support becomes a regular need and more support is being given then we will discuss this with you accordingly.
Homework – Reading and Phonics
Daily reading – we ask for 5 times a week. Reading really is the most important thing and so much research backs up how important the daily short time of reading is. See the reading section on the school website for more information.
Sounds and blendable words – on the blog we publish the sounds and keywords for the week so that you can support your child by practising these at home. Posted next to the new sounds there will be words to practise blending.
Common exception words don’t follow the phonics rules and can’t be sounded out. These are to read by sight.
If your child is confident reading all of the words posted then practise spelling them.
In your child’s book bag:
1. Phonics reading books – they will bring home 1 phonics book a week. As they move onto our Please ensure these are kept in their book bags and in school daily.
2. Reading record – please write in this every time you read. We will monitor reading at home and are here to support if you are struggling with this.
3. Library book and reading for pleasure book
4. Bookmark – to track our whole school reading incentive. We start a fresh in Year 1 so they have a chance to work through bronze, silver, gold and headteachers’ award. Maximum of 1 tick per day. This year we are going to be having a special story time with Mrs Fricker when children achieve their headteacher’s award.
Supporting maths learning at home
Number fluency – We recommend using the White Rose Minute Maths app (free to download from Apple and Android) to practise number fluency in short bursts. Particularly addition and subtraction facts within 20.
PE days are: Tuesday (Shine) and Thursday . No jewellery to be worn and please tie back long hair on PE days. Please ensure that all children have a named PE kit in school (white t-shirt and shorts). For Shine, children can wear usual school clothes with trainers.
Homework: It is important that your child is reading regularly at home, we ask for you to be reading at home 5 times a week. Later in the year children will be given a phonics and keywords book- in this on a Monday morning, they will write the new phase 5 sounds for the week along with key words to practise.
Children have access to PurpleMash. The login codes will be stuck in the front of their reading records very soon for you to start accessing at home.
Volunteering in school: If you have particular skills/expertise within the topics we will be learning about this year, please email details to the school office. We are still recruiting for Reading Rangers as per the school bulletin message at the start of term
Helpful resources from home:
If you have any of the following spare, they are gratefully received in school:
-boxes of tissues
-spare carrier bags
-resources for junk modelling (clean)-please send this in weekly!
-newspaper
Warm wishes, Mrs Hibbard and Miss Eskell
