Year 1 Home learning Week 6 Term 6

Hello Year 1 and welcome to Week 6 home learning. We cannot believe it is the penultimate week of term! Your work last week was amazing once again, you are really making us proud right to the end! Thank you for everything you are sending in, it really means a lot to see you working so hard at home. You are all incredibly resilient, just like the tortoise!

This week we are going to ask you to do a special task for us that we would like you to bring along with you to our celebration on the 16th July. We cannot wait to see you all!

Below again is a summary of this week’s learning to act as guidance only and not a strict timetable to follow. Please continue to  work with the routines that suit your family best. We do ask though, if your child is returning to school over the coming weeks that you do not complete work from the days suggested below on the days your child is in school as, in school  we will be following the timetable more rigidly. You should see  clearly the work that we are encouraging you to photo (3 pieces) to submit  into your 2 Build a Profile platform so that we can celebrate your work and give some more feedback. Work completed in school will be submitted by the teachers in the same way.  Remember that other pieces are welcome too, especially things that your child is really proud of.

Please click here for a pdf copy of the blog.

SubjectSuggested Work to be submitted
EnglishSession – 4. Completed Poem
MathsSession 3 or 4 – photos of your 3D shapes (either the ones made from nets or sticks).
TopicSession – Choose your favourite!

English – Reading and Phonics

Daily Reading
Carry on choosing books for reading, mixed up with games and other activities aimed at the level of your child from the Pearson site. As we have said all along, books you have at home or other sites you may also have been using are still fine too. Don’t forget to let your teachers know via your class email if you feel you need the next level or are having any difficulties.

Daily Phonics and Spelling
We will carry on with the link to phonics  for learning and consolidation. Continue to use them as best fits with your routines. These are consolidation of taught sounds. As last week, if you feel your child is secure with these sounds then please spend more time on spelling.      .

English – Writing

Session 1 : Grammar

Learning objective:
To use and identify verbs.
We are going to look at verbs. These are action or doing words. Watch the video below and write down the verbs that are shown. Think about your letter formation as you write the words. Can you think of any others?
You can also have a go at some of the activities.
Follow the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z8d6wn

Session 2 : Writing a memory
In preparation for our celebration and transition time on the 16th July we would like you to write down your favourite memory from being in school this year. It could be your favourite bit of learning, a funny incident or something special to you. If you are having trouble remembering that far back in the midst of time we suggest looking back through some of the old blog posts for Year 1 from this year. Hopefully, that will jog some memories! Publish your memory in your best handwriting and bring it with you to the celebration.  If you would like to, you will be given a chance to read your memory out to the rest of the class. If you’d prefer not to that’s ok too!

Sessions 3 and  4 : Pantoum Poem
Take two sessions over this task. This week we would like you to write a Pantoum poem about something or someone important to you. A pantoum poem has 4 verses based on 8 sentences rearranged in a particular order:
Verse 1 = 1,2,3,4
Verse 2 = 2,5,4,6
Verse 3 = 5,7,6,8
Verse 4 = 7,3,1,8
Trust us, it is easier than it sounds and very effective!
First write 8 simple sentences about your chosen subject. Then reorder your sentences as above.
There is a template to help you do this and an example below.
Template
Example of poem
Reduced challenge: Write out the simple sentences on strips of paper and have a go at rearranging them physically. Read your poem out loud as you go.
Extra Challenge: Publish your poem in your best handwriting and decorate the border. Perform your poem to your family.

Session 5: Comprehension
If you want to use this session for extra phonics time, to complete or watch a video then please do. Please click below if you would like to complete a comprehension. Remember that there are 3 levels, choose 1 to answer. You do not need to do all 3.
There is a reading comprehension about deep sea explorers. Choose the level of challenge to suit you.

Maths

This week our main learning is about ‘2D and 3D Shape’. As usual we are leaving Session 1 and 5 to practise more number based skills. The shape sessions are best done as practically as possible, so we have tried to provide a few other practical ideas as ways to practise using the necessary vocabulary. We have also provided some more sheet based and online ideas, however for 3D shape it is much easier for children to be able to handle the shapes and experience them in 3D where possible. This allows them to more easily identify their properties.

Session 1:
Snappy maths 1 more/1 less within 100 – again how many can you answer within 3 minutes. We have provided 1 more/1 less questions within 100 (following on from recent learning). You may need to briefly discuss the layout of the sheet with your child before you start a timer so they understand what is required.
Extension: Snappy maths website If you feel your child needs a different challenge or needs to work on a different skill the website that we use is here. There are even more options within each section that you click on. Some of the key skills that might also be good to focus on are the ‘Number bonds to 10 and 20’ or missing number problems within the Addition and Subtraction within 10 for a real challenge.
Followed by Numbergym or games from previous week’s. Try something from Daily 10 game perhaps (you will need a pen and paper to write the answers)

Session 2: 2D Shape
Daily fluency slide
Main:
Learning objectives:
-To name 2D shapes and describe their properties
BBC bitesize, 2D Shape – Follow through the games and videos on the website. Please note the videos refer to ‘corners’ and ‘sides’ to describe the properties of 2D shapes. Please note we would use the proper mathematical terms ‘vertices’ (or ‘vertex’ for singular) for corners and ‘edges’ for sides.
2D Shape Hunt sheet – there is an extension on the sheet
Optional extra: Draw and cut out some of the shapes and stick to make a shape picture. Use your imagination like the unicorn to make your picture! You could use this Geoboard game
Another idea: Playdough and cut shapes with a knife (good for fine motor skills too). Talk about the properties using vocabulary edges and vertices as you do.
Another optional extra! Carrol diagram game to sort 2D shapes

Session 3:
Daily fluency slide
Main:
Learning objectives:
-To name 3D shapes.
White rose video, Recognise and name 3D shapesWatch the video. Please try to highlight with your child what the difference between 2D and 3D shapes is; that 2D shapes are ‘flat’ and 3D shapes are ‘solids’.
3D Shape nets – Cut out and make the 3D Shape nets. There are lots! Please note the sheet labelled ‘tetrahedron’ we usually refer to as a ‘triangular based pyramid’ however both are technically correct. (Extension: get your child to predict what shape the nets will make)
Check this shape mat to see if you have any shapes missing. Can you find the missing shapes around your house? (for example a ball for the missing sphere)
Practise remembering the names of the shapes.

Session 4:
Daily fluency slide
Main:
Learning objectives:
– to describe the properties of 3D shapes, using the vocabulary edges, vertices and faces.
White rose video, 3D Shape properties – watch this video. The children would be best to have their 3D shapes that they made yesterday to be able to count the edges, faces and vertices when asked to during the video.
Practical task: Practise describing properties of 3D shapes. This could be by building your own shapes out of cocktail sticks and marshmallows/blu tac, as described in the video or by playing ‘name the shape game’ (where you sit back to back/out of sight in some way and describe the properties for the other person to guess what the shape is).
Extension: Try to think about the number of vertices, edges and faces as well as the shapes of each of the faces and if the faces are curved (e.g. a cylinder has 2 circle shaped faces and 1 curved face. It has 2 edges and no vertices)
Worksheet alternative/extra: Shape properties are better explored practically (it is much more difficult to see how many edges, vertices and faces they have on a picture of a 3D shape as opposed to being able to handle the shape) therefore the practical activity would be most suitable, however it does require quite a lot of adult input, therefore we have also provided a work sheet as well to try and cater to everyone as much as possible.

Session 5:
Further consolidation of work from the week or have a go at one of the extra challenges! Have a look at various online games and games on Numbergym to practise basic number work skills and recall of key facts.
