Year 2 Home Learning – Term 1, Week 5 (w.b. 28.9.20)

Hello Class 7! And hello to any other Year 2’s who are home learning this week. Below you will find the tasks we would like you to complete at home. They are all very similar to what the children in school are doing. It is really important that you do your best to complete the tasks; you have all made such a brilliant start to Year 2 so we need to try and keep it up!

Class 7 children, we would like to see three pieces of work (shown on the timetable and indicated in the plans). These should be sent to the class email (class7@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk). We will not be using 2buildaprofile for the time being.

The following timetable is intended as a guide. You will see that we have reintroduced daily exercise (we suggest Cosmic Yoga, Joe Wicks, or a vigorous game in the garden) and that daily reading for pleasure is still a feature. There are also daily phonics and thinking skills activities to complete.

All of this week’s resources and the teachers’ plans can be found here. Links to specific resources can be found throughout the plans.

A printable timetable can be found here.

Daily Thinking Skills activities are here.

We hope you all have a pleasant first week at home and we look forward to seeing your wonderful work!

English

Reading

Please continue reading as much as you can. Here is a comprehension activity to try too. You will see the questions have a star rating to indicate difficulty. Please use your judgement to select the appropriate level for your child.

Phonics

You will need some paper and a pencil for each of these phonics lessons.

Click on the link below for each phonics lesson and just remember when you are shown a grapheme (letter or group of letters), you say the phoneme (sound) only once.

Tuesday

Today’s sound is ir like in bird.

Wednesday

Today’s sound is aw like in dawn.

Thursday

Today’s sound is wh like in wheel.

Friday

Today we would like you to practise reading and writing the following words. These are some of our common exception words that we can’t purely use our phonics to read. Copy the word once and then cover it and try to write it down without peeking! You can then check to see if you were correct. Write the word three times without looking at the correct spelling. Then see if you can say a sentence with the word in and then write that sentence down.

Writing

All writing resources are here.

Lesson 1

Learning Objective: To record ideas using captions.

Look through the lesson 1 slides and watch the videos in the links. Then write a list of all the things you spot out of your window or in your garden that could show a dragon has visited. In my garden I spotted bark coming off the tree, half eaten apples and I found several shiny scales! I wonder what you will find.

Lesson 2

Learning Objective: To use a variety of simple pronouns (he, she, it, they).

Look through the lesson 2 slides and then create your own wanted poster for the dragon. Remember to include: a title, picture, caption, description, any warnings (Do not approach!), rewards and contact details. Challenge: Add in any commas in lists or expanded noun phrases (ancient, scary creature/enormous, scarlet eyes that shine as bright as the sun).

Lesson 3

Please send a photo of your amazing instruction writing to the class email address for your teachers to look at.

Learning Objective: To write clear instructions using commands.

Lesson 3 slides will run through how to write instructions to capture a dragon.Look at the lesson 3 slides and the instruction writing PowerPoint. The main things to include are a list of ‘You will need’ equipment and ‘Instructions’ which are numbered, include time words and commands.

Maths

Daily Fluency

Children should complete a Flashback 4 everyday. The answers will appear as you click through. They can record their answers and any working out on paper.

Frequent practise of the 2, 5, and 10 times tables (and the 3s if your child needs an extra challenge) would also be very helpful.

Lessons

We would like all children to complete three maths lessons. These lessons are all taught via tutorial videos.

Your child will need:

  • paper and pencil
  • the correct question sheet (answer sheets are available in the same folder)

The tutorials need to be paused frequently so please stay with your child as they work through it. Offer them support with their calculations if they need it or ask them to explain how they know things. Children should record their answers to questions in the video on their paper. The teacher on the tutorial will say when to answer the questions on the sheet.

Lesson 1

Learning Objective: To compare similar calculations using greater than, less than and equals to symbols.

The tutorial is here. Find the question sheet in the folder above. Please photograph and email us your answers.

Lesson 2

Learning Objective: To identify related facts.

The tutorial is here. Please find the question sheet in the folder above.

Lesson 3

Learning Objective: To add and subtract 10s.

The tutorial is here. Please find the question sheet in the folder above.

PSHE

In school we have been thinking a lot about learning behaviours and what makes a good learner and learning environment.

Make a poster showing five things that will support good learning at home.

You can also view Mrs Fricker’s Monday assembly here.

History

Learning Objective: To learn about the events that led up to the Battle of Hastings and to sequence them.

Resources are here. Please send us a photo of your comic strip.

Go through the slides on the PowerPoint and talk about any new vocabulary with an adult at home. You may want to talk about: Battle of Hastings, 1066, crown, victory, defeat and The Bayeux Tapestry.

Task: On the comic strip, write on the main events in order and then draw a comic strip picture to go with each event. Could you add in some speech bubbles like you would see in a real comic?

RE

Please read The Camel’s Story of the boy Muhammed to your child. Think about the following questions with them:

How did Muhammad behave? How might this make Muslims want to behave (kind, gentle, caring for animals etc.)? Why was Muhammed special?

Challenge:  Write a sentence about how the story is inspiring for Muslims: “I think the story of Muhammad’s childhood might make a Muslim want to be ….. because……”
