Year 2 Home Learning – Term 1, Week 6 (w.b. 5.10.20)

Hello everyone! Well done for a super first week of learning! We really enjoyed seeing all of your wonderful maths, writing and artwork!

This week, we will continue writing about dragons and we have an exciting new book to enjoy. We have some more maths tutorials to work through and some extra challenges if you would like them. In science, we are learning about materials and you will get the chance to design an outfit for a knight. There is also some beautiful artwork to have a try at, related to our learning about Islam.

Those of you in Class 7, please try to send us the three pieces of work indicated on the timetable to the class email (class7@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk).

Remember the timetable is a guide, do what you can and what works for your family. Please do try to fit in daily exercise and reading if you can. Monday is an Inset day so we have not assigned any learning.

All of this week’s resources can be found here. There are links to specific resources throughout the plans.

There is a printable timetable here.

The thinking skills are here.

We hope you enjoy this week’s home learning and we look forward to seeing your lovely photos!

English

Reading

Please continue to read as much as you can. Here is another comprehension activity to try (remember to choose the appropriate star rating for the questions).

Phonics

You will need some paper and a pencil for each of these phonics lessons.

Click on the links below for each phonics lesson and just remember when you are shown a grapheme (letter or group of letters), you say the phoneme (sound) only once.

Tuesday

Today’s sound is ue like in clue

Wednesday

Today’s sound is ph like in photo.

Thursday

Today’s sound is ew like in dew

Friday

Today’s sound is oe like in toe.

Writing

In writing this week, we will be starting a new story called ‘The Egg’ by M P Robertson.

The teaching slides for all three lessons are here.

Lesson 1

Learning Objective: To make predictions.

Look through the Lesson 1 slides and watch the video on the link. Write predictions about four things you think George will need to teach the dragon, providing reasons for each prediction.

An example of this could be ‘I think George will teach the dragon to fight a knight because a knight might come to take the dragon’s princess away!’.

If you feel your child could benefit from sentence starters to help them with this task then try this sheet.

Lesson 2

Learning Objective: To use coordinating conjunctions.

FANBOYS Coordinating Conjunctions Poster - Australia

Look through the Lesson 2 slides and then write a note for George from the dragon to explain where and why he has gone. Write the letter in the first person so you will pretend you are the dragon writing to George (the little boy).

You can use this letter writing template if you wish (choose the most suitable line spacing).

Lesson 3

Learning Objective: To use expanded noun phrases.

Expanded Noun Phrases - Display Poster (teacher made)

Look through the Lesson 3 slides. Your task is to write a cave setting description which includes expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. You will find examples on the slides.

Maths

Daily Fluency

Children should complete a Flashback 4 everyday. The answers will appear as you click through. They can record their answers and any working out on paper.

Frequent practise of the 2, 5, and 10 times tables (and the 3s if your child needs an extra challenge) would also be very helpful.

We would like all children to complete three maths lessons. These lessons are all taught via tutorial videos.

Your child will need:

The tutorials need to be paused frequently so please stay with your child as they work through it. Offer them support with their calculations if they need it or ask them to explain how they know things. Children should record their answers to questions in the video on their paper. The teacher on the tutorial will say when to answer the questions on the sheet.

Reduced Challenge: If you feel your child is not yet ready to engage with the tutorials, please have a look at these resources instead. They will provide the opportunity to practise and consolidate core number skills. Choose activities you feel your child will benefit from and enjoy.

Extra Challenge: If your child is keen to extend their learning they can try these challenge cards. There are three sets that relate to recent topics. Each set has 3 levels of difficulty, we recommend you work through from the beginning to get the most out of the resource.

Lesson 1

Learning Objective: To notice patterns when adding and subtracting 1.

The tutorial is here. BEWARE there is a little glitch in the voice over at around 5 minutes (it goes back to the start but resolves quickly). Please find the question sheet in the folder above. Please photograph and email us your answers.

Lesson 2

Learning Objective: To use number bonds to 10 to work out related facts to 100.

The tutorial is here. Please find the question sheet in the folder above.

Lesson 3

Learning Objective: To add 2-digit numbers, bridging 10.

The tutorial is here. Please find the question sheet in the folder above.

RE/Art

Learning Objectives: To understand the historical and cultural development of art forms. To recognise religious art, symbols and words and to talk about them.

This week we are learning about special artwork associated with Islam.

Look through the PowerPoint to learn about this unique and beautiful art form. There is a video at the end which demonstrates how to use a template to make tessellation patterns. See if you can use several different templates (5 would be ideal) to make a symmetrical pattern. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Science

Learning Objective: To identify, classify and compare everyday materials.

Day 1

Go through the slides on the PowerPoint about different materials, then look at this activity and try to sort the materials by whether they are natural or manufactured.

Next, go on a materials hunt! You will need the Materials Hunt Sheet (or draw out your own).

  • Search for some objects at home that are man made and some that are natural.
  • Think about the properties of each material you find (for example, is it stretchy, shiny, smooth or transparent)
  • Record your observations on the sheet.

Day 2

Your challenge is to design an outfit for a knight!

You will need:

  • the knight template
  • bits of various materials with different properties (fabrics, tin foil, cotton wool, wool, cling film etc.).
  • Scissors and glue (if you don’t have what you need for doing a collage you can just draw and label your design instead).

Use your materials to design a costume for a knight. Think about:

  • Will the knight be able to move?
  • Will they be warm and dry?
  • Will they be protected during battle?

Build your materials up in layers to try and meet all of the knight’s needs.

Challenge: Annotate your creation to explain your choices.
