Term 2, Week 1 – Year 1

Welcome back! We hope you have all had a restful week and are feeling ready to come back to school for another exciting term! We are certainly looking forward to what we have in store for yo this term.

Noticeboard

  • Remember that this is a four day week for children this week Monday is an INSET day. The first day of school for children is Tuesday 3rd November. 
  • Each class has now allocated the days for changing reading books. We have also communicated the arrangements for our ‘Learning Share’ slots this week. Each class has been split in half alphabetically. Please email your teacher if you are unsure via your class email.
    Class 4 – Tuesday
    Class 5 – Wednesday
    Class 6 – Thursday
  • Communications have been sent out via email about booking a ‘video call’ slot for parents evening for week 2. Bookings will be done in the usual way, online.
  • Please remember coats everyday even if the day starts fine and sunny! Last week we had a number of children in each class without a coat. We will always aim to get outside as much as possible so they really need a warm, waterproof coat each day.

English

Phonics
Daily Recapping of all taught sounds and blending and segmenting. We will be starting Phase 5 phonics next week. These include many more alternative sounds. We will strat by working through the long vowel sounds.
Keywords for spelling (revise):

Practice putting them into sentences.

Next week we will send home a sticker to go in your sound and keyword book with specific sounds and words to practice that have been identified in our assessments for each child. We shall also talk through this at parent’s evening.
Vocabulary: noun, adjective, phoneme, sounds,  blend, letter name, word, sentence, Capital letter and full stop

Writing

  • Write an acrostic poem about fireworks using descriptive sounds and adjectives.
  • Make a poster about keeping safe on Bonfire night. Explore safety rules and how these are best displayed on a poster and how the use of language, text type, colour and picture are all important.
  • Handwriting linked to our fireworks theme.

Reading
Change home books on  designated day of the week.

  • Read as part of a group and/or individually, recognising and joining in with predictable phrases.
  • Whole class reading – explore prediction and inference.
  • Look at fluency and comprehension at differentiated levels.
  • Read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words. 

Maths

This week we will be thinking about Place Value and concentrating on splitting the numbers 11-20 into tens and ones. We will also be trying to represent this in a wide variety of ways, as shown in the picture below.

Learning Objectives: 
To count forwards and backwards to 20, beginning with 0 or any given number.
To recognise numbers to 20 and write the numerals
To recognise numbers 11-20 are made up of ‘ten and a bit’.
To partition number 11-20 into tens and ones and represent this in a variety of ways as shown below, including as a number sentence (e.g. 12=10+2)
To compare numbers using the < > = symbols

Wider Curriculum

PE
Jumping! Focusing on straight/pencil jumps and tuck jumps, as well as doing quarter turns.
Learning objectives:
-I can help, praise and encourage others in their learning and I can work -sensibly with others (social objective).

-I can develop my balance and agility focussing on jumping and landing.

Art – Firework Art
Learning Objectives:
-I can use different techniques to create firework art.
-I can chose colours and techniques that best suit fireworks.

What do fireworks look like, what colours and effects would you like to use? Use various different materials to create artwork.

Science – Seasons
Learning Objectives:
-I understand that there are 4 seasons each year.
-I can describe the changes across the season changes.
-I can compare day length in Autumn to other seasons and explain the differences.

Focus on the changes to plants and animals during the seasons. Link festivals and things we do and celebrate in each one (Bonfire Night and Halloween, Christmas etc) to the seasons they fall in. Complete a tree template for each season and write a sentence or two to describe the season. Focus on day length and weather and what that means for plants/animals.

PSHE – Celebrating Differences The same as ….
Learning Objectives:
-I can identify similarities between people in my class.
-I can tell you some ways in which I am similar to my friends.

Can you identify 3 ways that you are similar to a partner? Could be anything from being human to wearing the same school uniform! Write 3 similarities with their pair on the t-shirt template to stick on their person.

RE – Diwali
Learning Objectives:
-I can recall stories about an inspiring person.
-I can say how stories in a certain tradition can be inspiring for a believer.

The word Diwali means rows of lighted lamps. Ask children to recall some of the events in the story of Rama and Sita. Design a Diwali card using Rangoli patterns. Discuss some of the questions below.

  • Who are the main characters in the story?
  • What is important in the story for Hindus
  • What do Hindus celebrate at Diwali?
  • How do Hindus celebrate Diwali?
