Hello from Class 1

Hello parents and carers of Class 1 children. We have had a super week at school. Here is a picture of our ELLIE art work and some construction (including sandwiches) by our busy bee’s. We have been exploring numbers 5-10 and children have been sharing what they already know. Children really enjoyed behaving like pirates in the PE demonstration on Thursday, as they practised agility and balance. They have done well in phonics too learning j, v, w. All of us are really pleased with how the children’s blending is coming on. Thank you so much for all of your support at home with reading, it is helping them a lot. Towards the end of the week it has been foggy and frosty which the children have found quite exciting adding to a Christmassy feeeling.

In week 5 December starts! We will be supporting children to make Christmas crafts as independently as possible. Some children may find scissor work tricky so any practise at home could help. We will be putting up our Christmas tree in class. Children will be allowed to decorate their class tree as many times as they like but we will be telling them to follow instructions at home. We will be investigating different ways to make ten and writing a letter to Santa. As some of the children missed a session of Forest School the leader has kindly offered to do an extra session. This will be Wednesday in week 5 because another class will begin their sessions on Thursday. We will be supporting children to navigate through this exciting month with lots of calming activities in between the festivities. This week we are continuing to focus on the ELLI animal the Bee. We are going to focus on being good team players and how we can support each other in our learning.

Notices

Can you believe that it is December  1st on Tuesday!  December is aways an exciting month in school and we are planning lots of things to make it as normal as possible despite all the COVID restrictions.

Nativity

Instead of our usual Nativity Play performance we are planning a special surprise for you that we will be recording outside.

We would like the children to all wear their lovely winter coats, hats , gloves, scarves etc and look cosy and Christmassy. However the recording will be weather dependent so please look out for messages asking for these at short notice. I’m sure we can rely on the class Whatsapp groups to help spread the word!

Christmas Cards

This year we are unable to invite the children to send each other lots of Christmas cards. However, if they wish to, they could write one card to the whole class that we will open together and display in the classroom.

Celebration Assembly

Our Reception Stars this week were:

Class 1 – Phoebe Mcintosh

Class 2 – Dolly Hinks

(Class 3 will catch up next week!)

Communication and Language

We continue to support development in this area by talking to the children about what they are doing, encouraging them to listen and to take turns in conversation. When watching something or reading stories we will ask questions to check that the children are actively listening and understand what is happening in the program or story. We will continue to talk about the story ‘Bee and Me’ developing our own narrative to the story.

We will play games like I Spy,  silly sentences ( where all the words begin with the same sound) and robot talking t( breaking the words down into individual phonemes eg  r…e…d…  instead of red ) to encourage your child to listen to the phonemes in words.

Physical

In PE are perfecting our one leg standing balance. I can work on simple tasks by myself. I can follow instructions and practise safely.

In dance we will continue to support children’s brain and body coordination development with Write Dance.

This week we will read in small groups and 1:1. We will continue to allocate them a home reading book from our online reading scheme. Please continue to talk to your children about their reading book, what do you think will happen next? What happened in the beginning, middle and end?

Mathematics

This week will be learning about 2D (flat) shapes and talking about their properties. How many sides  have they got? How many corners? Are the edges straight or curved? We will be using 2D shapes to make patterns and pictures.

Our observation challenge this week is to send a photo and observation of a your child finding 2D shapes in the environment. . Please ask the children to tell you about the shapes that they have used and record it in the notes using their own words.

We will also continue to think about the numbers 6 – 10;  recognising the numerals, counting amounts up to 10 accurately and ordering numbers to 10.

We will be exploring the different ways that we can make numbers to 10 using 10s frames and recording in Part Part Whole diagrams and number sentences.
