Year 2 – Term 3 Week 1

Hello Year 2’s who are home learning this term. Below you will find the tasks we would like you to complete at home. It is really important that you do your best to complete the tasks; you have all made such a brilliant start to Year 2 so we need to try and keep it up!

This week, we just want you to familiarise yourself with home learning again and so don’t expect you to send any pieces of work in. We will update you on how learning will be sent in moving forward later this week.

From next week, we will be providing an example timetable as a guide for you to follow if you wish to, but please do what works best for you!

All of this week’s resources and the teachers’ plans can be found here. Links to specific resources can be found throughout the plans.

We hope you all have a pleasant first week at home and we look forward to seeing your wonderful work next week!

Reading, spelling and phonics

Daily reading

For this week, please can you log on to your Bug Club online reading account and let your teacher know if you are having any issues with signing in via your class email.

Encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes each day and choose from a mixture of fiction and non-fiction texts. Try to read each book three times to support your child’s decoding of words, fluency and comprehension of what they have read. Click here to go to the Bug Club login page.

Spelling and Phonics

This term we are moving onto teaching the children spelling strategies. If however your child is still working on blending to read words, please access the videos below for some revision of their phonics instead.

You will need some paper and a pencil for each of these lessons.

Spelling

This week, we will be focusing on adding the suffixes -ing, -ed, and -er to the ends of words.

The resources are here.

Phonics

Click on the links below for each phonics lesson and just remember when you are shown a grapheme (letter or group of letters), you say the phoneme (sound) only once.

Writing

In writing this week, we will be starting a wonderful new story, linked to our space topic, called ‘Look Up!’ by Nathan Bryon. Before starting the task please enjoy the story by clicking here.

This week’s writing task:

Learning Objective: Write a short narrative about what you experience during your Look Up walk.

Think about what you know about looking up. Why might you look up? What would you see? Look at slide 7 on the powerpoint and talk about the importance of looking up.

Go outside (if you can) and take a ‘Look Up!’ walk. Use your five senses to really experience your surroundings. Once you are back inside, note down what you saw, heard, smelt, felt (literally and emotionally) and thought.

Task: Write a paragraph about your experience of the Look Up! walk.

Reduced Challenge: Aim to write three simple sentences.

Extra Challenge: Write an extended recount, including an order to your experiences and detailed description of senses, thoughts and feelings.

Maths

This week, we have designed two maths lessons for your child. They are all labelled either ‘Day 1’ or ‘Day 2’.

Please do them in the order below:

  1. Flashback 4
  2. Fluency task
  3. Teaching Powerpoint with voice recordings to click on for your child to listen to. (Please ignore the ‘voice recording’ folder/files as they will not make sense in isolation).
  4. Worksheet provided. (There is a reduced challenge sheet in the folder too. Please choose the most appropriate level for your child).
  5. Extension task if it is appropriate for your child.

Not all of the resources need to be printed (for example, Day 1 Fluency task is number bonds to 10. Your child could access the sheet on a screen and write the number sentences on a piece of paper).

Task 1:

Learning objective: To draw pictograms where the symbols represent 2, 5 or 10.

The resources are here

Please follow the order above.

Task 2:

Learning objective: To interpret pictograms where the symbols represent 2, 5 and 10 items.

The resources are here

Please follow the order above.

PE

Please remember the importance of daily exercise and aim to go outdoors once a day. Joe Wicks will be starting his live PE classes again from next week but you can try some of his shorter workouts here which are a great way to start the day and create a positive mental attitude to the day of learning ahead!

Daily wellbeing

It will be more important than ever to look after your child’s and family’s wellbeing.

Here are some starter suggestions for this week:

  • Feelings – ask your child to tell you things which help them to feel calm. You could try collecting a few things in a Calm Box eg bubbles to blow; a soft toy to cuddle; a story to share; bubble wrap to pop. Here are some more ideas for ways to feel calm – Calming cards
  • Mindfulness – take time to be still and listen to the sounds you can hear around you  (indoors or outside)
  • Thankfulness – Tell someone in your family something you love about them

PSHE

Dream and Goals

Our Jigsaw PSHE topic this term is Dreams and Goals, the PSHE sessions are designed to be whole class discussions, so if possible these sessions would be best as an adult and child discussion or even as a family discussion. Find the link to the Powerpoint here

RE

This week we will be thinking about who inspires or guides us.

Have a think about what people help, inspire and guide you? What makes them special? It could be parents/ grandparents/ other relations/ teachers/ football coach/ Brown Owl….

Do you know the words inspire and guide? Remember you can use a dictionary (online) if you are not sure.

Task: To draw a picture of someone who inspires you and write a sentence about why they are inspiring.
