Year 1 Home learning Week 6 Term 3

Well done again for another wonderful week of home learning. A massive well done to everyone for making it to the final week of term! This week we have an exciting week planned for you based around Chinese New Year. 2021 is the Year of the Ox! This is a whole school theme and a lot of the activities are the same for each year group, in the hope that this will allow parents with children in multiple year groups to complete the activities alongside each other. The activities that are designed to be used across all of the year groups detail how to adapt the activity to suit the age group, however please feel free to use the suggestions from Reception and Year 2 to allow you to extend or reduce the challenge for your child as required.

Also this week is Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 9th February, so this weeks Monday’s Assembly is Miss Ross telling a story about Smartie Penguin. As well as a timetabled session on the Tuesday itself.

These are our whole school E-Safety Rules which we will discuss during this week, I’m sure you will agree that a good understanding of how to use the internet safely is particularly important at this moment in time!

There are 2 links to folders for you access the printables this week, one is the Year 1 specific resources here and the other is whole school resources here.

You can print a copy of the blog here.

Session 1The Story of Chinese New Year 🐂

2021 is the Year of the Ox. Watch this short story of how all the animals were chosen for the different years for the celebrations of Chinese New Year. CBeebies – Puppet Show of Story You could also look at the powerpoint together about the story. Then look at the poster.  There are 12 animals altogether. Can you find out which animal represented the year that you were  born? Then you could find out the animals for each of your family. Do some of you share the same animal?
You can print off sheets of the animals that represent you and your family to colour or draw your own.
You may want to make puppets like in the clip to retell the story.

Session 2 – Chinese maths session
Video showing how to count to 10 in Mandarin.
Powerpoint to look at demonstrating how to form Chinese numbers 0-10.
Children can then have a go at either writing their own numbers using anything they like, such as pencils or paint.
Or they could have a go at one of these sheets:
Tracing Chinese Numbers
Number bonds to 10

Session 3 – Geography: Creating a Map of China

Learning Objective:
To locate China on a map and to create a map of China showing some of its physical features.
Watch the video of the lesson here. Find the lesson slides and map template here. Your task is to use what you have learnt about China to create a simple map showing some of China’s physical features.
Reception: to use pictures to represent some of China’s features on a map.
Year 1: to use a combination of pictures and word labels to show features on a map.
Year 2: to label the capital city of Beijing and other parts of China on a map and to use a basic key to show representations.

Session 2 – Maths 📸

Learning objectives
-To find 1 more/less than a number within 50
Input:
Video (powerpoint or pdf if you would rather work through at your own pace). Video explaining how to use tens and ones knowledge to find one more and one less than a number. It is the ones digit that changes, except there are 2 extra rules
1. If you are doing 1 more and ones digit is a 9 you moved into the next bundle of ten.
2. If you are doing 1 less and the ones digit is a 0 then you go into the previous bundle of ten.
Activity
Sheet – 1 more/less within 50
Reduced Challenge: Sheet 1 more/less within 10
Extra Challenge:
Sheet – a 1 more/less problem within 100

Please submit this piece to Google classroom 📸

Session 3 – Computing: Safer Internet Day
Learning objectives
– I know the internet can be fun and good to help me learn!
– I am familiar with our schools E-safety rules
– I know what private information is and that I shouldn’t share this online (name, age, birthday, address)
– I know what a digital footprint is and that it is difficult to remove.

Input
Video – Watch the video of Miss Ross reading Digiduck’s Famous Friend. This recaps our whole school E Safety rules and then discusses what ‘private’ or ‘personal’ information is.
Activity
Create a private information passport to help children understand what private information is (name, age, address, family and friends names, school, passwords etc). There are a number of ways you could do this, using the paper template below, creating your own template or using Purple Mash to create one. You could also come up with a anonymous username you could use online rather than sharing your name, mines unicorn61!
Passport template
Purple Mash – if you choose to use Purple Mash it should be set as a ‘2Do’ (however if not go to ‘English’, then ‘2Publish’, then selecting the ‘My character is…’ template). They can then draw a picture of themselves on the left and list their private information on the right. Miss Ross’s example below is mostly blank so that my information is private!

Optional extras:
Purple Mash
– E Safety Quiz about how to create and keep your passwords safe (again should be in your child’s 2Dos).
Please see here for extra ESafety videos aimed at infant age children. https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/jessie-and-friends-videos/

Tricky word recognition truck game – if you hover over the phases you will be able to see the words that it practises (Phase 5a or 5b Tricky words, reduced challenge: phase 3 or 4)
Video – Recap the graphemes taught (/ear/: ere, eer and /air/: ear, are) – please fast forward past the sounds and words flash cards at the beginning if you were able to play the games above that do this at your child’s level
Powerpoint – if you would rather go through this at your own pace (Pdf version)

Session 1 – Making Chinese Dragons!

As we are thinking about how many people will be celebrating Chinese New Year, we have seen that  one of the great symbols of China culture is the Chinese Dragon.  Chinese dragons are a symbol of China’s culture, and they are believed to bring good luck, happiness and wealth for the new year.
As a school we thought we could get creative and make our very own Chinese Dragons.
Here is a video that will show you one idea.
Here are some more examples of the different ideas you could think about:

You might have your own way to create a dragon – Be a creative unicorn. See what you can do!

Session 1- Writing about Chinese New Year 📸

Watch the video which will talk you through the task. There is also a powerpoint version of the slides which will help as you write.

Use the pictures to help create a sentence. On the sheets there are a number of pictures. You may just want to choose 1 or you could have a go at more. Write a sentence to go with the picture. What is the picture showing? Talk through the picture and your sentence or sentences first.

You could write on the sheet or cut out the pictures and stick them in your books to write underneath. Each set of pictures also has a mini word bank which will help to give you some ideas.

You can write a simple sentence or older children could really push themselves to include lots of adjectives and maybe conjunctions. Examples below:
The dragon is red.
The dragon is fiery red.
The dragon dances up and down and is shaking and spinning to the beat of the drums. It has one rippling movement but is made by lots of different people working together. It is beautiful.

Session 1 Art: Making Chinese Lanterns

You will need red paper or card for this craft if possible. Alternatively you could decorate plain paper to make it more special!
You can watch a video here. Further ideas include decorating the paper lantern, making lots of mini ones to make bunting, practising Chinese writing on the lantern (after you cut it but before you glue it together).
If your child enjoys craft here are some more ideas based on the animals of the Zodiac.

🦄Unicorn-Being creative.
🐝Bee-Working as part of a team.
🕷Spider-Making connections with their learning.
🦉Owl-
🐱Cat-Being curious. Asking questions.
🐢Tortoise-Slowly and carefully working or making.
