Year 2 – Week 5 (w.b. 22.3.21)

Noticeboard

  • For Year 2’s homework this term, we are asking the children to make an Easter bonnet each. We would like the children to bring their bonnet into school on Monday 29th March and later in the week, we will have an Easter bonnet parade to the other Year 2 children in the playground. There will be a winner from each class who will receive an Easter egg as a prize!
  • Please remember that there is an inset day on the final day of term (Thursday 1st April).
  • Thank you for all of your kind contributions for Red Nose Day.
  • Remember to click the link to plans and resources below if your child is needing to self-isolate but is well. Please email the class email address if you find yourself in this position and are unsure.
  • We will continue to aim to get outside as much as possible so they need a waterproof coat each day even if the weather looks OK when you send them to school in the morning.

Celebrations from Week 4

In school this week, the children have been really immersed in the book (and true story) of Hidden Figures. They have loved writing questions to ask Dorothy Vaughan and written a persuasive speech pretending to be her. The story tells the story of four black women who worked for NACA (before changing to NASA). This story enabled classes to have important conversations about race and celebrate equality.

In maths, we have continued to learn about shape and recap fractions work that was covered remotely. The children loved sharing the learning that they completed at home.

During our topic sessions this week, we have been continuing to think about habitats and thinking about the inquiry question ‘What would a planet need to look like for a hedgehog to survive?’. The children enjoyed learning about and hunting for habitats and micro-habitats.

Since returning to school, the children have really enjoyed rebuilding their relationships with one another and have been completing well-being activities each day. We have been continuing to talk to the children about appropriate play and behaviour in the playground and about polite table manners at lunch times. We would really appreciate it if you were able to reinforce these messages at home too.

Week 5 Learning

This will be our final week of learning about space. Although we wish we could have been together to share all of the exciting learning over the past two terms, we (children and teachers!) have really enjoyed it.

During Week 6, we have planned a whole school topic on chocolate as Easter is just around the corner.

English

This week we are writing a diary entry from the perspective of Toki, from the story Ride of Passage. If you would like to see the clip you can watch it here.

We will plan our diary entry, focusing on the senses and what Toki experienced. We will make sure we use lots of exciting adjectives and verbs!

We will be writing our diary entries independently to see what we can do all by ourselves. There will be lots of time to read our work aloud and to support each other with editing.

Maths – Measuring Length and Height

This week is all about measuring! We have lots of fun practical tasks lined up to help children perfect their measuring skills!

We will use rulers to measure using centimetres and try measuring larger objects and distances in metres. We will also be using the <, > and = symbols to compare lengths and practise putting lengths in order.

Science/Geography

We are continuing our science work by learning about food chains this week.

New Vocabulary: producer, consumer, prey, predator.

We will be thinking about where the hedgehog would fit into food chains.

We will also be bringing together all off our recent science learning (habitats, micro-habitats, climate, food chains) to design a planet for a hedgehog to live on.

You could try this fun food chain challenge at home.

PSHE

We are continuing our learning about relationships and thinking about secrets. Some secrets are good to keep but sometimes it is not so good to keep a secret. ‘Worry secrets’ might make us feel sad or frightened. We will talk about examples of these and think about solutions.

RE

We will be recapping and reviewing what we have learnt about why Jesus is important to Christians.

Please click here to see the planning if you are self isolating.
