Year 2 – Term 5 Week 4

Noticeboard

  • We will continue to aim to get outside as much as possible so they really need a waterproof coat each day.
  • Please continue to use Bug Club books, as well as those your child is bringing home.
  • Week 4 is our whole school enrichment week (you can read more about it below). All children need to wear their PE kit on Wednesday 12th May as they will be taking part in a special drama session.

Week 3 celebrations

For children and teachers, a particular highlight of our week was our WOW day. The children loved planting their own seed, launching an experiment and going on a walk around the school site to identify and classify different plants.

Alongside this, each child chose an artist to inspire their sketch of a bunch of flowers. They were able to choose between Georgia O’Keefe, Henri Fantin-Latour and John Dunstall.

Week 4

This week, we are taking part in the whole school enrichment week focusing on ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’. Each class will have a drama session with an outsourced company on Wednesday afternoon.

English

Writing:

The children will be using expanded noun phrases and correct punctuation to write a character description about the characters from ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’. In groups, they will write a poem as a group using two different animal characters. We will be working with each group and will have a great emphasis on vocabulary and rhyming words. Towards the end of the week, the children will get a chance to perform their poem to the rest of the class.

Reading:

We will be reading with the children individually this week. The children will also complete an Owl and the Pussycat themed comprehension.

Focus spellings: class, grass, pass, path, bath, beautiful, after, people, water, everybody

Grammar:

We will focus on using the suffix ‘ful’ as in colourful and revisit using the ‘ed’ ending when writing in the past tense.

Maths:

This week in maths, the children will be recapping addition and subtraction. They will be adding 2 two digit numbers and subtracting crossing 10. We talk to the children about ‘exchanging’ and the children say “we swap 1 ten for 10 ones”. For a lot of this week’s maths, the children will have the choice to use concrete resources or draw pictorial representations to support their understanding. They will also be adding 3 one digit numbers together too.

Science

Year 2 will continue to monitor the plants we have used in our experiment to find out whether they need light and water to grow.  The children will also continue to record the progress of the seeds they planted by completing a ‘Seed Diary’.  This will entail drawing and measuring their plants as they grow.

Art

Continuing with our theme of ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’, the children will be creating paintings using wax crayons and ‘Brusho’.

Geography

The children will be working collaboratively as a class to design a large map to show the path the Owl and the Pussycat took while sailing in their boat. They will be working like the imaginative ELLI unicorn.
