Year 2 Term 1 Week 5

Celebrations from week 4

The children have really enjoyed exploring our new text ‘Tell me a Dragon’. They have been showing off their wonderful imaginations by creating their own dragon and using fabulous adjectives and powerful verbs to describe what it looks like and how it behaves. The children also loved investigating different historical sources to gather facts about castles and use the information to design their own castle. Following that, the children used their designs to build their castles out of clay. We were so impressed with the results!

English

This week in English, we will be investigating the surprising sighting of dragons in the Henleaze area! We will be using our knowledge of adjectives, verbs and adverbs to help us write wanted posters to hopefully assist in capturing the creatures. We will produce some instructions on how to do this safely so that no humans or dragons are harmed in the process.

Maths

Maths this week will focus on adding and subtracting. We will be using our number bonds to 10 to help us find number bonds to 100, spotting patterns when we add and subtract 1 as well as identifying 10 less and 10 more. We will also be continuing with more than and less than symbols to compare similar calculations.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

In KUW this week the children will be listening to medieval music and creating their own pieces using untuned instruments. They will also listen to and create pieces of music using the iPads. In science this week the children will be thinking about the suitability of various materials for different purposes. They will also explore and sort natural vs. manufactured materials.

Religion and World Views

In R + WV the children will be learning about the baptism of Jesus, unpicking what baptism means and symbolises. The children will look at and discuss pieces of art depicting Jesus’ baptism and then have a go at creating their own piece of art based on these. Their artwork will include 3 symbols:
dove = Holy spirit
water = new life, cleansing,
light = Jesus is like light to the world

PSHE

In PSHE the children will be discussing rewards and consequences and how they can help to keep their classroom a safe, enjoyable environment. They will explore how words and actions and simple things can also be just as valuable as material rewards, but in a different way.
