Reception – Term 1, Week 6

Noticeboard:

  • Please provide your child with a PE kit to keep on their peg as soon as possible. We will be doing PE indoors, so trainers are not needed until the summer terms. We are starting PE this week and the children will need a PE kit to change into.
  • We hope your child enjoyed their first reading book. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. Please remember to return your child’s phonetically decodable reading book and reading for pleasure book every Monday. They will swap their books for new ones on Mondays.
  • If you haven’t already, please send in a photo of your family to be part of a class display. You can do this by handing your child’s class teacher a photograph or email the class email address.
  • Please remember to send your child to school everyday with a coat. We go outside in all weathers.
  • Now all of the children are doing full days, please provide your child with a water bottle (water only, no squash/juice) and a piece of fruit in a named container.

Celebrations:

In Week 5, the children enjoyed learning about the chameleon and it was great to hear them talking about how they are going to ‘change’ their learning/plans. Every child has drawn a picture of their family and had a go at writing their name on the first page of their writing book. We have been really impressed with the children’s ability to find one more than a given number. The Reception children have loved learning new vocabulary while learning about chameleons. They have been learning about ‘camouflage’ and ‘change’.

This week’s learning:

This week we will be continuing to learn about the Chameleon who is one of our ELLI animals. We will continue to explore how the Chameleon helps us change and adapt our plans in our learning. We will continue to focus on the story ‘The Mixed up Chameleon’ by Eric Carle.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This week, alongside remembering our class rules, we are thinking about why it is good to be kind and use gentle hands. We would really appreciate it if you could reinforce the ‘gentle hands’ messages at home.

Communication and Language

The Reception children will continue to learn new vocabulary related to chameleons. For example camouflage, disguise, speckled, skin and projectile tongue. The children will continue to engage in storytimes and sing songs in their classroom.

Physical Development

We will be starting Write Dance this week which will be moving like exploding volcanoes. In PE, we will be going to the hall and playing energetic start – stop games. In handwriting, we will be exploring dots as we draw and mark make.

Literacy

This week we will be applying our knowledge of phomemens learnt so far in phonics and learning the new phomemes g, o, c, k. Please support your child at home to practise the letter formation of s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k. Click here to see the correct formation of the letters.

We hope you have enjoyed reading with your child this week and hope you enjoy sharing the next book too. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. We will be reading with every child again this week to find out more about their early reading skills (following text with their finger, blending, knowledge of grapheme phoneme correspondence etc.)

Mathematics

In Maths this week, we will be learning about one less within 5. This will support the children to understand the ‘one less than’ relationship between consecutive numbers. They will do this by playing many games they learnt last week, but changed and adapted to learn about one less, rather than one more. They will continue to explore fives/tens frames and fill them with counters, taking off one at a time to find one less.

Understanding the World

We will continue to learn about similarities and differences in our families and share texts to support this.Children will be supported to use new animal based vocabulary about chameleons.

Religion and Worldviews

This week, teachers will introduce the “All About Me Box”. This will then be sent home with a different child each day. When your child brings the box home, please read the instructions inside it, and return to school with objects and photos for your child to talk about with the class. This is an important opportunity for them to talk about themselves, as well as for the other children to listen and ask questions, showing respect for each other.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week in Reception, we will be exploring colour mixing of the primary colours. We will also have lots of creative resources for the children to explore through the week, including chameleon drawings, collage materials, junk modelling and a range of drawing utensils.
