Important dates:

  • Monday 18th October/Thursday 4th November – On Monday 18th October, you will receive an email with information about the Reception year. We are inviting you to a Zoom Q&A meeting on Thursday 4th November at 6:30pm.
  • Tuesday 19th October (Class 2 and 3) and Wednesday 20th October (Class 1) – each class are going to have a whole day where they immerse themselves in Autumn (Autumn Wonder Day). We will be doing lots of exciting activities including a welly walk. We ask that you provide your child with a pair of wellington boots in a plastic bag to hang on their peg from Monday 18th October. They will be returned by the end of term. We are also inviting children to bring into school, 1 item they may have found that represents autumn e.g. a red leaf, conker.
  • Wednesday 20th October – You will be receiving the first part of your child’s learning diary via Evidence Me. You should have already received (and hopefully accepted) an invitation from Evidence Me. Please download the app and login to your account to view your child’s learning diary from Wednesday 20th October. Click here to see the Parents Guide from Evidence Me. We will be inviting you to add observations to the learning diaries from Term 2 and will be posting more information about this on our weekly blog.
  • THE FIRST DAY OF TERM 2 IS AN INSET DAY, SO FIRST DAY BACK FOR CHILDREN IS TUESDAY 2ND NOVEMBER.
  • From Term 2 – As we near the end of the induction period, we’d like to thank you for your role in making this a positive start to school.  We have been so pleased with the way children are settling and know they are now all ready for full days, so we will be reverting to the whole school timings of 8:50 – 3:30.
  • Thursday 4th November – Open morning and Reading Ranger meeting. 1 parent for each child is invited to come into classrooms and on our patio areas to explore the learning environments. Parents Evenings will follow in Week 2 These will again be held virtually and you will receive an email about how to book soon.
During this first week back we will send out further information about the Reading Rangers and then there will be an opportunity in week 2 to join a zoom call if you have any further questions. This is instead of the scheduled meeting due to COVID restrictions.

Notices:

  • Please remember to read the phonetically decodable reading book with your child everyday. Reading the same book daily for several days helps to develop fluency and embed phonic knowledge and skills. Please write a positive comment about your child’s reading in their log book everyday. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. Please remember to return your child’s books every Monday as they will swap them for new ones on Mondays.
  • Harvest Festival Donations- This week we will have our Harvest Festival in school and a chance for Reception to join us for our special singing assembly. Remember to bring in any food stuffs in packets and tins that are non-perishable. More details are in the school newsletter. We ask for all donations to be into school by the end of term so that they can be collected and distributed during the break.

Celebrations:

The children have really enjoyed learning about the ELLI Unicorn this week and have been engaging in lots of lovely imaginative play. Every child has made a unicorn mask too. Every child has been read with at least once by an adult and we have been really impressed with their grapheme phoneme correspondence and fantastic blending skills. The children have been using the Maths Working Wall to identify ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ (see picture below).

Class 3 are class of the week! They are now looking after the class cup until next Friday.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will continue to think about our class rules and learn what being responsible means.

We will remember the ELLI animals we have learned about so far – the Owl (good ideas and making plans); the Chameleon (adaptability); and the Unicorn (creativity).

Communication and Language

During our Autumn walk, the children will be learning and using new vocabulary relating to Autumn (e.g. crunchy, foggy, harvest, amber, rustling, willow).

Physical Development

We will be exploring different ways of jumping using bent knees and soft landings as we imagine a moon adventure. We will be focusing on making circles in handwriting.

Literacy

This week we will be learning the new phonemes h, b, f, ff. We will also be learning a new common exception word: no. Please watch the video below to find out how the phonemes are pronounced.

Please support your child at home to practise the letter formation of s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, h, b, f. Click here to see the correct formation of the letters.

We hope you have enjoyed reading with your child this week and hope you enjoy sharing the next book too. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. We will be reading with every child again this week to find out more about their early reading skills (following text with their finger, blending, knowledge of grapheme phoneme correspondence etc.)

Mathematics

This week, the children will be making simple patterns e.g. ABAB and ABBABB. We will do this using objects such as 2D and 3D shapes, big and small objects and leaves collected on our Welly Walk. Alongside this, we will also be making up clapping patterns.

Understanding the World

This week, the children will be taking part in out ‘Autumn Wonder Day’. This will include a Welly Walk around our school grounds looking for signs of autumn, boosting vocabulary and collecting leaves. We will collaboratively make a map of our walk. Children can bring in natural items they find linked to Autumn on Thursday.

Religion and Worldviews

We will be thinking about special people who help us to know what to do (including parents, teachers, doctors and religious teachers eg vicar, rabbi, imam.)

We will also continue to share our All About Me Boxes. Every child will get a chance to take the box home in Term 1 or 2.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week we will be creating Autumn pictures. We will be discussing the different colours we see during our Welly Walk, things we noticed and exploring autumn pictures by famous artists e.g. Claude Monet.
