Year 1 Learning Week 1 Term 2

THE FIRST DAY OF TERM 2 IS AN INSET DAY, SO FIRST DAY BACK FOR CHILDREN IS TUESDAY 2ND NOVEMBER.

Noticeboard

Thursday 4th November – **The following amendments have been made due to the increase in COVID cases in the community:
Classes 4 and 6 9-9:45 am – OPEN MORNING
1 parent for each child is invited to our patio areas to look through your child’s work and look around their classroom in small groups.
Class 5 2:45-3:25 pm – OPEN AFTERNOON
1 parent for each child is invited to their patio area to look through your child’s work and look around their classroom in small groups.
We ask that face coverings are worn both indoors and out and strongly recommend visitors take a lateral flow test on the morning of the visit. Anyone displaying any symptoms associated with Covid should refrain from visiting school.

Parents Evenings will follow in Week 2 These will again be held virtually like last year.

Reading Rangers – During this first week back we will send out further information about the Rangers and then there will be an opportunity in week 2 to join a zoom call if you have any further questions. This is for those of you who feel you are able to regularly commit to reading with children in school. This is instead of the scheduled meeting due to COVID restrictions.

This week your child will be bringing home their Sounds and Keywords books for practicing their phonics and spellings in at home. More information will be in the front cover of these. We will also be launching our new reading incentive, ‘Read for the Stars’ at the end of week 2 so look out for these in book bags.

Author Visit – We are very lucky to have an author visiting us in Week 2 of Term 2. Information was sent out about this in Term 1. Click this LINK to an order form and more information if you have not received it. All replies and monies need to be returned to school by Monday 8th November (Next week!)

Next week we will be mapping our ‘Journeys to School’. Whilst you’re walking/travelling to school this week, help your child to take a note of special features, roads that are crossed and the changes of direction that you make on the way. This will really help them with their Geography next week. Together y9ou may want to jot/sketch out a quick map that they could bring in.

  • Children will change for their PE sessions so please continue to ensure that children’s PE kits are in school on their pegs. They need a white T-shirt, black shorts and a change of shoes, pumps or trainers. All the classes had their first ‘changing times’ last week. Thank you for  supporting and preparing your children for this. It is an important part of their learning and promotion of independence to change unsupported.
  • You will find below a grid showing the sessions to be taught each week. They do not exactly follow days as each class has different sessions due to support and PE times being different but it allows you to see the week as a snapshot of sessions.

We will always aim to get outside, whatever the weather, as much as possible so children will really need a waterproof coat each day.

R+WV (Formally known as RE) – DIWALI – This year, this festival is to be celebrated on Thursday 4th November by those of Hindu faith. We will tell stories about an inspiring person and say how stories in a certain tradition can be inspiring for believers. People who follow the Hindu religion celebrate the triumph of good over evil with a festival of lights called Diwali. This also marks the start of the Hindu New Year. The word Diwali means rows of lighted lamps.

Art and DT – Fireworks and Diwali – Festivals of Light I can use different techniques to create firework or/and Diwali art and I can chose materials and colours to work with that best represent fireworks/lights.

PSHE – Firework Safety. Create a poster for being safe with fireworks. Think about ourselves and pets. Research different poster styles first. What will make such an important message stand out to the reader?
