Notices:

Poppy Appeal
Poppies will be on sale on sale in school on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th November. If you would like your child to purchase a poppy or Poppy Appeal band, please send them in with a donation of at least £1 to give to their class teacher on those days.

On Thursday this week we will be welcoming a guest author in for a visit to each of our classes. You should have also received further information about this visit before the half term break. If you wish to order a signed copy of the book, please see the information below:

On Friday morning we will have an enrichment morning following the author visit. The children will immerse themselves in the book shared with us by our guest author by decorating their own alien-inspired bake and completing other reading response activities. Please look out on the blog for celebrations of our morning.

Advance notice for Week 3: The week beginning 15th November is ‘Friendship week’ that we are going to celebrate as a school. We are going to kick this off with Odd Socks Day on Monday 15th November. (We are not expecting a donation for this as it falls in the same week as Children in Need)

Week 5 celebrations:

We have had a fantastic first week of Term 2. The children have come back refreshed and ready to learn! Everyone has been super engaged in our mini topic of the Gunpowder plot and Bonfire Night. The children acted out the events of the plot using stick puppets which they all really enjoyed. They have also produced some wonderful pieces of writing about Bonfire Night, using their senses.

English

This week in English, we will be moving back to our Knights and Castles topic. We will be learning about the various roles that people in medieval times had within a castle. We will think about what it would have been like to work in a castle and choose a role to apply for. We will go through a job application process – filling out an application form and then get interviewed for our chosen job role. We will use our persuasive skills to convince the King or Queen that they must hire us right there and then!

Reading

Our dedicated time for exploring Reading for Pleasure books and changing levelled books is MONDAY. Please ensure your child has their books and reading logs with them on this day ready to change.

We have our Phonics Screening Check this week. You have had an email from the Y2 team before half term with all of the information regarding this. We will be spending the rest of our phonics sessions having fun with mastery games

Maths

In maths we will be continuing with our topic of money. We will select and compare amounts and begin to solve real-life problems involving notes and coins. At home, the children could practise this by helping an adult do the shopping and counting the change.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

In KUW this week the children will begin to prepare for their trip to Caldicot Castle in Week 3 by learning about a famous artist – JMW Turner. He is famous for sketching and painting beautiful pictures of castles. The children will practise their sketching skills in art this week in preparation for the trip where they will sketch Caldicot Castle using their observational skills.

It is Remembrance Day this week and we will be selling poppies on the 11th November so send your child in with £1 on this day if you would like to purchase one. The children will be learning about what it was like to be an evacuee during this time and looking at newspaper articles and other memorabilia from the war. As well as making some poppy art.

Religion and World Views

In R + WV the children will be learning about marriage again – with a focus on other faiths. They can link this new knowledge to their learning from the previous week about Chirstian marriage. The children will choose one of the faiths they have learnt about and create a fact sheet about marriage in their chosen faith.

PSHE

In PSHE the children will be celebrating difference. They will acknowledge and celebrate that it is ok to enjoy different things and explore the beauty of being unique.
