Week 3 celebrations:

We had the most wonderful time on our trip this week. Please click the link to see some photos of what we got up to!
Caldicot Photos

The children worked so hard on Friday to write up a recount all about what we did on the trip. They wrote in past tense and in chronological order. They are excellent. Here are some quotes:

‘I was so excited I could burst’ – Sophie B
‘We were really excited because we were going on a coach’ – Ruby
‘In between the lovely stories he played a beautiful harp’ – Alice
‘Yesterday Year 2 went to Caldicot Castle because it’s connected to our knights and castles topic’ – Lottie

English

This week in English,

Reading:

This week we will be linking our whole class reading to our writing outcomes, which is all about ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’ by Julia Donaldson. If your child shows particular interest in this book, please follow the link below for inspiration on more great (but less well known)reading for pleasure titles written by this author:

We have just launched our exciting new reading incentive: Read for the Stars. Please follow the link to find out more Read for the Stars – New Reading Incentive

Phonics:

Learning this week focuses on alternative pronunciations of ‘y’

-’y’ as in ‘by, try, shy’

-’y’ as in ‘gym, syrup, Dylan’

-’y’ as in ‘very, cheeky, crispy, family’

Spelling:

Spelling bee: On Monday we are going to be holding our own Henleaze Infants Y2 Spelling Bee. Previous details sent out. This is a fun event for children in their classes. To prepare your child, you can ask them to practise spelling words that you give them, encouraging them to use the letter names when repeating back to you. Also, please talk to them about how to encourage their friends, and manage their own feelings when participating in group competitions.

In our dedicated spelling session this week we will be learning the spelling rules for

‘l’ spelt ‘el’ e.g. camel, squirrel, travel, towel

We have previously looked at ‘l’ spelt ‘le’ at the end of words e.g. little, kettle, turtle

Writing:

In writing this week the children will revisit the story of ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’. They will design a new Flying Doctors outfit for Princess Pearl to help her cope with Zog’s bumpy landings! They will then need to use their persuasive letter writing skills to write to the King to convince him that their outfit design is best. To conclude this block of work, the children will then present their persuasive letters to their friends.

Maths

In maths we will be beginning our multiplication block. We will be starting by thinking about making equal groups and linking this to repeated addition. We will then begin to use the X symbol and use timesing number sentences for pictures. Finally we will be looking at arrays and writing the related multiplication sentence. Click here for the WhiteRose video about using arrays if you would like to support your children at home.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

In KUW this week the children will become coding extraordinaires. They will recap what an algorithm is and begin to use Purple Mash to code different characters to do various actions ‘when clicked’, and after a timer.

Religion and World Views

In R + WV the children will be learning about Christmas and Advent. We will be retelling the nativity story by creating a story map.

PSHE

PSHE will be centred around identifying what bullying is and what we can do if we think someone is being bullied. We will do this through sensitively roleplaying some scenarios and discussing appropriate ways to react.
