  • Tuesday 14th December – We have made the difficult decision to cancel our carol concert at the Church but we will still sing some carols out on the playground.
  • Tuesday 14th December – Christmas dinner day
  • Thursday 16th December – Christmas parties, please look out for the sign up sheet (this will be on patios) asking for you to contribute food towards this. Also please name any containers you may use so that we can return them to you. Children can also wear party clothes to school on this day.

Week 6 celebrations:

Our homework sharing this week was wonderful. The children brought in and shared some really imaginative and creative pieces of work. We saw instruments made of cardboard and foil, engaging letters to Knights and some delicious bakes and recipes! Thank you for all of your support with these mini projects.

The children have been excellent scientists again this week, recapping what they have already learnt about waterproof materials and using it to test everyday materials to see if they could help Storm from the Elves and the Shoemaker story to make a new umbrella.

If you are learning from home this week please access the learning here: Week 7

English

Reading:

In guided reading we are doing some Christmas themed comprehension tasks to expand our reading skills.  If you are home-learning there are some more activities you can do if required.

It is wonderful to continue to see the Read for the Stars bookmarks getting filled in.

Please continue to fill in the reading records before marking the date off on the bookmark. Please ensure that an adult does this and is not a child.

Read for the Stars – New Reading Incentive

Phonics:

We will be sending out results to the recent phonics screening check by the end of Term 2.

Learning this week focuses on alternative spellings of phonemes:

Ch as in picture

Ch as in catch

Mb as in lamb

Spelling:

In our dedicated spelling session this week we will be building on our learning of ‘igh’ spelt ‘‘y’ at the end of words:

Writing:

The children will start their writing this week by showing off their best handwriting in a Christmas card to a loved one. They will also get an opportunity to find out all about how different countries around the world celebrate Christmas. They will learn a catchy song about this and then write about what traditions they enjoy at Christmas time.

Maths

This week in maths we will start our new topic – data. They will begin by interpreting tally charts using their knowledge of counting in 5s. To support this at home you can practise counting in 5s with your children. They will then use their new understanding of tally charts to create and interpret Christmas pictograms.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

The children will be involved in many wonderful Christmas themed activities this week, including thinking about the changes in the weather and how cold wintery weather affects animals. As well as some wonderful art activities which will be coming home with the children!

Eco Notice

It was so lovely to have our first Eco Committee meeting last week with KS1 children. They have received their badges and we enjoyed introductions and talking about what we hope to achieve over the year. We thought it would be nice to highlight some ideas from the Young Climate Warriors website that families could participate in over the Christmas period;

Connecting with nature as a child is considered an essential building block for striving to protect and value nature into adulthood.

Supporting resources include a link to:

Robin’s birdsong – RSPB

How to draw a robin – Harriet Muller (we have deliberately avoided the ‘American’ robin versions!)

Simple bird identification sheet – WWT

How to make a Christmas Wreath for birds – Wildlife Watch

If your children really gets the bug, they could sign up to take part in the the RSPB’s Annual Big Garden Birdwatch – taking place from 28th to 30th January 2021.

Wishing you a relaxing break, with time to also pause and enjoy our wild birds.
