Reception – Term 3, Week 3

Please remember that Friday 21st January is an INSET day.

Noticeboard

  • Every child needs to bring their book, book bag and reading record into school every day
  • Click here to find out about our whole school reading incentive called Read for the Stars.
  • Phonics and letter formation – We are really pleased to be able to share this document with you (click here). The document shows you the Phase 2 phonemes with a description of the corresponding action, the correct letter formation and the image children that will associate with the phoneme. The children have been learning these phonemes in their Phonics lessons, so should already be familiar with them. Please use this document to support your child’s letter formation and use the ‘script’ that we use in school to ensure consistency.
  • This term, we are inviting parents to contribute to their child’s learning diary. Each week, we will request an observation. Please read the weekly learning to find out which area of learning we would like you to contribute to. Click here to see the Parents Guide from Evidence Me.
  • When using the Bug Club books, please remember to click the ‘X’ to close the book when your child has read it, otherwise teachers cannot see that it has been read.
  • Please remember to read the phonetically decodable reading book with your child everyday. Reading the same book daily for several days helps to develop fluency and embed phonic knowledge and skills. Please write a positive comment about your child’s reading in their log book everyday. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. Please remember to return your child’s books every Monday as they will swap them for new ones on Mondays.

Celebrations

Congratulations to the children who received their Bronze ‘Read for the Stars’ certificate this week. Click here to find out about our whole school reading incentive called Read for the Stars.

This week, the children have really enjoyed making a whole class map of the school. The children thought about where the rooms in the school were in relation to each other and where the patio, hall, dinner hall and playground are.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be setting individual goals and encouraging each other to persevere.

This week, the children will be introduced to the story ‘Me on the Map’ by Joan Sweeny. The children will be asked questions about this book to develop their comprehension and will have the opportunity to act the story out.

Word of the week: Landscape – please talk about the meaning of this word with your child and point out any landscapes you see.

Physical Development

We will be continuing to practice walking forwards and backwards along a line lifting our arms and legs to 90 degree angles.

This week we will be learning the new digraphs/trigraphs ‘ure’ and ‘er’. We will also be learning the new Common Exception Word ‘her’.

Please click here to see the correct letter formation and ‘script’ we use in school to support children to form their letters. This will ensure consistency between home and school.

This week we will continue to read with your child either 1:1 or in a small guided reading session. Please continue to read with your child every day to improve their fluency with a text. Ask your child questions about the characters, what they think might happen next and discuss/ explain what they think is happening in the pictures.

Writing – This week we will be writing a recount of a walk around the local area.

Maths

In Maths this week, we are going to be continuing to think about the composition of numbers up to 5. We will be focusing on number bonds to 5. Number bonds to 5 are two numbers that together, make 5, for example 2 + 3 = 5. The children will be supported to become fluent in these number facts and they will be encouraged to recall them quickly.

You can support your child’s learning at home by encouraging them to play ‘Bond Builder’ on NumberGym. The first game will show images like the one below. This supports your child to understand that 4 + 1 = 5.

As a school, we subscribe to NumberGym and there are lots of fun games available for your child to play at home. These games will support children to develop fluency.

Click here to find out how to login and click here to go to the NumberGym login page.

Understanding the World

This week Reception will be going on a short walk around the local area. We will be noticing natural and built up features of my community and building an understand that some places are special to members of the school community.

Religion and Worldviews

This week, we are continuing our theme of ‘Why are some times special?’ by learning about Salat – Muslim prayer times.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week we will be creating an observational drawing of a landscape in school, looking at the work of different artists including Vincent Van Gogh.
