Year 2 Term 3 Week 3

Notices:

REMEMBER: FRIDAY 21st IS AN INSET DAY. SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED TO PUPILS.

Week 2 celebrations:

The children absolutely loved our WOW day. Thank you for supporting this by sending your children in with some absolutely incredible costumes! We were blown away by the effort you all put into making the day so special for the children.

A highlight was making models of Earth from plasticine, creating the core, mantle and crust and then cutting these open to reveal the layers inside.

The children were so engaged and excited all day – here are some pictures to give you a snapshot.

Reading:

It is wonderful to see some completed sides of bookmarks this term. This shows your commitment to reading regularly at home and will be celebrated with certificates! Please see below for a reminder of the Read for the Stars incentive.

Read for the Stars – New Reading Incentive

We will continue with guided reading and activities linked to reading skills. We are really interested in sharing examples of information about SPACE. If you come across an article/ information page/ news page that would be of interest and is suitable to be shared with the class -please send it in!

We are beginning to focus more on comprehension skills. These are the skills that we apply to show that we have understood what we have read. Your adult can ask you comprehension questions every time you read to them: have a look in the front of your reading records as a reminder.

Phonics:

We continue daily blending revision to help us apply our segmenting and blending skills to unfamiliar words.

Key learning this week focuses on:

Daily blending and these alternative graphemes:

Spelling and Grammar (SPAG):

We are placing greater emphasis on teaching specific aspects of grammar this term. These key building blocks of English will be combined with our weekly spelling lesson and also feature in our daily writing warm ups. Please see below for an overview of grammar and spelling for term 3.

Writing:

This week the children will be working up to their big write which is on Thursday. This will be a recount of their WOW day. They will put everything they have learnt over the last 2 weeks into practise. Some of these will be published on the blog so keep your eyes peeled!

Maths

In Maths this week the children will be:

  • Drawing 2D shapes
  • Learning about lines of symmetry
  • Comparing 2D shapes
  • Making patterns with 2D shapes
  • Recognising 3D shapes and colouring faces of 3D shapes

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

In science this week we are beginning a sequence of lessons learning all about animals including humans. Our first lesson will be on survival and what are our basic needs, we will be imagining we are taking a journey up to Mars. What would we have to bring with us? What would be nice to take for comfort? . Then we will be looking at animals and their offspring, what is the same about them, what is different?

Religion and World Views

In R + WV we are thinking about the big question, why is Jesus important to Christians? We will be looking at some of the miracles he performed and asking questions about what this means.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be thinking about the challenge we set ourselves, have we achieved it? How will we persevere if not? What steps do we need to take to challenge ourselves and succeed in our goals?
