Term 3 Week 5

Notices:

POLITE REQUEST FOR OUR ART SESSION: If you have any old cutlery lying around please could you send it in with your child next week to help us create a large sculpture in the style of Subodh Gupta. Here is an example of his work. (Please note – You will not get it back!)

Week 4 celebrations:

We were incredibly lucky to have a video call with Jack’s (Class 7) Mum’s cousin who works for NASA! The children loved her presentation – especially the amazing video of a rocket launch! We wish you could all have seen the children’s inspired faces gazing up at the big screen! There was a buzz of excitement throughout Year 2 for the whole afternoon after our call ended.

Reading:

It is wonderful to see more completed sides of bookmarks this term. This shows your commitment to reading regularly at home and will be celebrated with certificates! Please see below for a reminder of the Read for the Stars incentive.

Read for the Stars – New Reading Incentive

We will continue with guided reading and activities linked to reading skills. We are really interested in sharing examples of information about SPACE. If you come across an article/ information page/ news page that would be of interest and is suitable to be shared with the class -please send it in!

Please can we ask that children’s books and reading records are brought in DAILY. Many thanks for your support with this.

In guided reading we are continuing to focus more on comprehension skills. These are the skills that we apply to show that we have understood what we have read. Your adult can ask you comprehension questions every time you read to them: have a look in the front of your reading records as a reminder.

Phonics:

We continue daily blending revision to help us apply our segmenting and blending skills to unfamiliar words.

Spelling and Grammar (SPAG):

Please see below for our termly plan. Supporting your child with practising the spelling of the weekly Common Exception Words would be really helpful to their learning. If you want to follow any of these SPAG skills up at home, please click on the home learning link to access the weekly resources and plans.

Writing:

In writing this week the children will be watching a short video about a boy named Toki. Their task will be to write a diary entry from the perspective of Toki and his experience in the jungle. This piece of writing will be completely independent to help inform our planning so we can identify any gaps the children might have and how best to support these.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

KUW this week will have an art focus. We are going to be learning about and comparing natural and man-made sculptures.
The artist we are studying that uses natural materials to create his structures is Andy Goldsworthy. Here are some examples of his work:

We will work in small collaborative groups to create a natural sculpture in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

We will be creating a large-scale sculpture as a year group using everyday objects.

POLITE REQUEST: If you have any old cutlery lying around please could you send it in with your child next week to help us create our large sculpture in the style of Subodh Gupta’s work. Thank you so much! We can’t wait to share our creation with you.

Maths

Next week in Maths we will be using Mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement. To help us with our learning, we will be doing lots of practical activities such as using beebots, creating treasure maps and directing others around the school. We will be focusing on the following terminology:  left, right, forwards, backwards, clockwise, anti-clockwise and whole, half and quarter turns.

Religion and World Views

In R + WV we are continuing with our miracle booklets, learning more about Jesus and his disciples and the miracles he performed.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be making a garden of ‘Dream and Goals’. Every child will work in a group to decorate together a bird to go in the garden, which is a calm, safe space for children to share their aspirations.
