Reception – Term 3, Week 7

Fundraising - World Book Day

World Book Day

Thursday 3rd March is World Book Day! To celebrate this day which acknowledges the importance of reading for pleasure, we have some exciting events for you to join in with:

  • Dress up as your favourite book character!
  • Bring in a printed photo of you reading a book that makes you smile (please make sure we can see the cover). If there is special meaning behind your story e.g. a family favourite or one that reminds you of a special time or event, please feel free to bring in a short explanation to share.

Noticeboard

  • Every child needs to bring their book, book bag and reading record into school everyday.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources on the patio before school (including the mountain and the bikes/scooters). Please pass this on to your any adults who bring your child to school.
  • Friday 18th February – Whole school Maths day and 100 day celebrations. You will have received an email this week to tell you more information.
  • It would be really helpful if the children could wear their wellies into school on a Monday morning, ready for running the Monday Mile. Please make sure they have their school shoes in their bag.
  • Phonics and letter formation – We are really pleased to be able to share this document with you (click here). The document shows you the Phase 2 phonemes with a description of the corresponding action, the correct letter formation and the image children will associate with the phoneme. The children have been learning these phonemes in their Phonics lessons, so should already be familiar with them. Please use this document to support your child’s letter formation and use the ‘script’ that we use in school to ensure consistency.
  • Please remember to read the phonetically decodable reading book with your child everyday. Reading the same book daily for several days helps to develop fluency and embed phonic knowledge and skills. Please write a positive comment about your child’s reading in their log book everyday. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. Please remember to return your child’s books every Monday as they will swap them for new ones on Mondays.

Celebrations

We have been really lucky to have some visitors in school this week. We have had a midwife and a doctor come into school to talk to us about their jobs. The children have been really inspired by these talks and have been using a stethoscope to listen to the dollies and each others heart beats!

Our word of the week has been sequence. The children have enjoyed learning about what a sequence is and sequencing the story Zog and the Flying Doctors. The children have also been working hard to put the days of the week in the correct sequence.

Congratulations to the children who have completed the first side of their ‘Read for the Stars’ bookmark this week. Please alert your child’s class teacher if your child has completed one side of their bookmark. Click here to find out about our whole school reading incentive called Read for the Stars.

Evidence Me observation

Music observation: This week ‘make your own instrument.’ At home, have a go at making your own instrument to add to our music provision in school. Some ideas could be : two paper cups stuck together or a bottle with some rice in it to make a shaker, a tissue box with elastic bands across to make a string instrument or attaching straws together to make a wind instrument.

Please click here to view the Evidence Me parents guide.

Week 7

Please click here to access the plans if you are self isolating.

To watch this week’s whole-school assembly click here.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This week, we will be identifying our feelings, and thinking about empathy and how others are feeling. We will be sharing ideas about how to feel calm when we’re upset or tired.

Communication and Language

This week we will continue to engage the children in story times by asking them to talk about the stories they have been listening to. We will be encouraging children to articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences and encouraging them to connect one idea or action to another using a range of connectives.

Word of the week: adjective

Physical Development

We will be exploring and perfecting our seated balance as we explore jungle animals and play cheeky monkey games on our bottoms. In Write Dance we will be using our silver wings to soar and loop and glide.

Literacy

Please continue to use the phonics grid with your child to practice all the phonemes we have learnt so far. We suggest doing this alongside their daily reading.  If your child has misplaced the grid, click here to access it.

This week we will be mastering previously learnt phonemes from phase 3.

Please support your child at home to practise their letter formation. Click here to see the correct letter formation and ‘script’ we use in school to support children to form their letters. This will ensure consistency between home and school.

This week we will continue to read with your child either 1:1 or in a small guided reading session. Please continue to read with your child every day to improve their fluency with a text. Ask your child questions about the characters, what they think might happen next and discuss/ explain what they think is happening in the pictures.

Writing –This week we will be using adjectives to describe ‘Zog’.

Maths

This week, the children will be learning about 9 and 10. They will continue to apply counting principles when counting to, and back from, 9 and 10. The children will represent 9 and 10 in different ways.

On Friday 18th February 2022, there will be a whole school Maths day to enrich our curriculum and promote the enjoyment of Mathematics. We have chosen this day as it will mark reaching 100 on our daily counts. Each class has been keeping count using the ‘Henleaze Daily Count’ in their classroom and have added one straw for each day of school. We are asking for your support in enabling your child to come to school with one thing you can find at home that represents 100. Some examples include:

  • A top trumps card with ‘100’ on it
  • £1 (100p)
  • An item that is 100cm tall
  • Something that weighs 100g
  • A puzzle with 100 pieces
  • A book with 100 pages
  • 100th anniversary booklet
  • As this date is the final day of Term 3, it will be a non-school uniform day. Your child could wear a piece of clothing representing 100.

During our whole school maths day, the children will be showing the items they bring in from home to their class, as well as taking part in an investigation; ‘How can 100 be grouped?’ (e.g. in 10 groups of 10 or 20 groups of 5).

Understanding the World

We will be reviewing the terms activities, using our class book, and making a collaborative summary of what we have learnt. We will be welcoming into school a dentist from our school community. Each child will bring home a toothbrush and toothpaste, kindly donated by Morrisons.

Religion and Worldviews

This week, we are discussing Birthday celebrations as part of our “Why are some times special?” theme. We will also reflect on how people feel at celebrations.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week we will be using all of our knowledge from our topic ‘Where We Live’ to design and create features on maps from around the school.
