Writing:

This week we are being Creative Unicorns by innovating our well known story:

The Egg - M.P. Robertson, book, teaching resources, primary resources, Early

We will be changing the character in the story and the lessons that he/she is taught by George. We will then be creating innovated story maps, art work and practising the art of oral storytelling in order to share our own versions to Reception children at the end of the week!

Spelling: On Thursday all Year 2 children will have the opportunity to participate in a Spelling Bee with our cluster schools. This is a fun event for children in their classes and children are asked if they would like to ‘have a go’ or be part of the audience. There is no pressure. To prepare your child, firstly ask them if they would like to ‘have a go’ and make sure they communicate this to their teacher on Thursday when asked (a gentle reminder on the day before school is always helpful). Secondly, you can ask them to practise spelling words that you give them; encouraging them to use the letter names when repeating back to you. Also, please talk to them about how to encourage their friends, and manage their own feelings when participating in group competitions. Many thanks in advance for your support with this fun activity.

You could practise at home with your child using this example spelling list:

  • Box
  • Badge
  • Bridge
  • Snow
  • Fudge
  • Change
  • Charge
  • Magic

Please note: the children will be challenged to use letter names rather than sounds to spell.

Reading:

Guided reading sessions will be accompanied by activities linked to previously taught grammar. We will improving sentences by rewriting them with the correct capital letters and full stops and looking at which conjunction is best to use to join two sentences. We will also begin to introduce ‘free writing’ which is an opportunity for children to be creative in their writing through responding to a picture or short video clip.

Phonics:

This week we are learning these sounds:

Monday: ou (could)

Tuesday: ou (mould)

Wednesday: y (by)

Thursday: y (gym)

Friday: y (very)

Maths

In maths this week we will continue our work on addition and subtraction. Our lesson objectives for the week are:

  • Add two 2-digit numbers (across a 10)
  • Subtract two 2-digit numbers (not across a 10)
  • Subtract two 2-digit numbers (across a 10)
  • Compare number sentences
  • Missing number problems

If you want to support your child with their learning you can visit https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwv39j6 together.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

In KUW this week the children will learn about the use of tone in artwork and how different tones evoke different emotions. They will look at different ‘knights and castles’ images and discuss the use of tone in each image and how the images make them feel. They will then experiment with tone, using black and white paint to make various colours lighter and darker.

If you would like to expand on your child’s understanding of materials at home, you can watch these videos with them on BBC bitesize: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4wdmp3/resources/1

Religion and World Views

In R+WV this week the children will think about what their names mean and why their adults gave them their specific names. The children will then move on to thinking about common Muslim names and their meanings. The children will learn about Isalmic birth ceremonies; what happens, when and what each event symbolises. They will then create some Islamic geometric art.

PSHE

Our focus in PSHE this week is to consolidate our learning from PSHE this term. To demonstrate their understanding of choices and consequences the children will draw a picture of someone who is choosing to follow our Learning Charter. They will explain why and how this person is making a good choice.
