Term 5 Week 2

REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A 3 DAY WEEK DUE TO BANK HOLIDAY AND INSET.

Week 2 starts Wednesday, 4th May.

Maypole Dancing:
If your child has signed up to be part of the Maypole performance at the May Fair, practise sessions are running throughout Term 5.

Our new topic:
Our new topic for Terms 5 and 6 will be ‘Into the Wild’. Here is a snapshot of what we will be learning.

Celebrations:

The children came back raring to go from a nice long Easter break. Our new topic has started brilliantly!

Each class has 4 class plants that have been put in different conditions and the children are really enjoying watering these and watching them change over time – we have some that are thriving and some that are already looking a little sorry for themselves!

Each child also has an individual plant each that they will watch grow and monitor using a plant diary!

We will always aim to get outside, whatever the weather, as much as possible so children will really need a waterproof coat each day.

English

Phonics:

We continue daily blending revision to help us apply our segmenting and blending skills to unfamiliar words. At parents’ evening teachers will have mentioned to you if your child is continuing to be supported with Phase 5 phonics in school. Please ensure that you are doing regular practice at home. Ideas to support are:

-spotting a phoneme (sound) in reading books as you read the words. Just focus on one or two at a time.

-using Phase 5 flashcards to revise saying the phoneme (please see your class teacher if you need a photocopy of these)

Spelling and Grammar (SPAG):

Here are the common exception words to learn throughout this term. We will focus on them throughout the week and your support at home will ensure children become fluent in spelling these. There will be a common exception word check in at the end of term.

Reading:

Due to the bank holiday children will be changing their reading books on Wednesday this week. As it is only a 3 day week, one to one reading will be prioritised over group guided reading sessions this week. We will continue to focus on our Reading Dogs and using them to help us in Special Agents Training S.

Writing

We will follow up on our learning about the Tin Forest by writing a setting description of the ‘dream forest’ in the text. The children have already gathered some incredible vocabulary to help them with this including:

  • Spectacular
  • Blooming
  • Vibrant
  • Tropical
  • Lively
Words of the week:

Deserted
Breathtaking
Glorious

Maths

In maths this week we will continue consolidating our understanding of addition and subtraction equations. We will use many different strategies to answer more complex problems and have a go at some Secret Agent Training!

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

This week in science we will be carrying out a long term observation of how plants survive in different conditions. We will test four plants using variable factors like no sunlight and no water. We will also be planting our own seeds and identifying and labeling different parts of a plant.

Religion and World Views

In R+WV this week we will be learning about the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr and creating some Fanoos lanterns.

PSHE

In PSHE this week we will be talking about the different forms of physical contact you might receive from friends and family – eg. hugs, kisses, hand holding, pat on the back etc. We will discuss how we can use our hands to be kind and what a good friend does with their hands – eg. high 5, handshake, hug.
