Year 1 Learning, Term 4, Week 3

What amazing costumes last week for our World Book Day Celebrations. Thank you to all who helped with this. We all had a really fun day thinking about our love and enjoyment of books.

Noticeboard

Next week we will be making a fruit salad, We will be using some of the following fruits:

Oranges
Kiwi fruits
Orange juice

Please let your class teacher know if there are any allergies.

  • You will find below a grid showing the sessions to be taught each week. They do not exactly follow days as each class has different sessions due to support and PE times being different but it allows you to see the week as a snapshot of sessions. 
  • We will always aim to get outside, whatever the weather, as much as possible so children will really need a waterproof coat each day.

Theme: World Book Day Follow-up – A World Full of Books

Phonics: Phase 5b – Alternative Pronunciations
Focus alternatives:  ow (snow)   ie (chief)   ea  (head)   er (her)
CEWs and spellings: many laughed because when what  I’ve, I’ll, don’t, it’s, I’m 

Grammar: Understand contractions used in common words and how to write

Session 1 : Write a character description of your World Book Day fancy dress character  and why you chose  to be that character last week.
Session 2:  Read a book as a class- children to write a book review of the story (using a template). 
Session 3:  Grammar Session : Look at contractions (e.g. I’m = I am)
Session 4:  Handwriting: Focus on correct letter formation to practise

Reading:

  • Read as part of a group. Look at front cover details and explore making predictions, using phonetic knowledge to decode unknown words and to extend vocabulary. Read aloud and look at increasing fluency and use discussion as a group to discuss comprehension and start to answer written questions.
  • In reading groups, continue to continue on phonic and CEW recognition gaps identified.

Maths

Addition and subtraction within 20 and Missing number problems

Session 1: 

  • Read write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition and subtraction and equals
  • Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20 including 0
  • Solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction and missing number problems using concrete resources.

Building on last week’s introduction to missing number problems we have a practical session using concrete resources to help secure the skill.

Session 2: 

  • Read write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition and subtraction and equals
  • Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20 including 0
  • Add 3 single digit numbers
  • Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20

Last week we used number bonds to help us with some of our missing number problems and we are going to continue to practice that skill and recap how it can help us with adding 3 numbers

Session 3 : 

  • Read write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition and subtraction and equals
  • Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
  • Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20 including 0
  • Solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete resources and pictorial representations and missing number problems.

We use all our Maths skills in addition and subtraction to help us solve word problems and start to explain our thinking.

Session 4

We finish the week with Snappy Maths – a timed mental arithmetic challenge and using all our Maths skills to solve reasoning problems.

Wider Curriculum

PE-  SHINE Outside Session 

Jasmine PE 

DT – Cooking and Nutrition. Discuss the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to design a dish of fruit salad before making it next week. Learn about appropriate hygiene and safety with using knives.

Science 
Animal Classification- Looking at major groups such as reptiles, amphibians, insects, birds,  fish, mammals. Exploring different ways to group animals using features children can see and choose.

R+WV

Look at the Bible story of  Easter- Look at the main events of the bible story. Remind the children that Christians are currently preparing for the festival of Easter and this time is called Lent as they prepare.

Music

Continue with learning songs for our play!! Read the story of the play through and discuss the characters. Ask the children about the different parts and ask them what they would like to play.

PSHE – Being Healthy Our PSHE and some of our science this term is all about what our bodies need to be healthy. This lesson will continue to form our science this week where we look carefully at the importance of staying ‘Clean and Healthy’.

Due to our World Book Day Celebrations and our Drama Sessions we did not have a star of the week assembly last week. Any reading certificates will be also given out this week.
