Year 2 Term 3 Week 1

Celebrations

Wow – what a wonderful term full of excitement! We have loved sharing some really special times with the children and parents – the castle trip, the carol service, the theatre trip… thank you so much for all of your support over the term.

We hope you have a lovely Christmas and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 4th January 2023.

Our trip to Belle and Sebastien at the Old Vic was just wonderful. It was lovely to see the children’s faces light up with excitement during the engaging performance! Thank you to our parent helpers who came along. We really appreciate your support.

Notices:

Please remember the first day of term is Wednesday 4th January 2023!

Friday 6th January – Space WOW day. Please come dressed up as something space-themed. We LOVE homemade or recycled costumes – please don’t feel you must buy anything for this.

Our new topic is…..

SPACE!!

The children will be introduced to our new topic of Space. They will explore our new topic books – both fiction and non-fiction, discover and play with space toys, models and objects in our topic areas in class and immerse themselves in all things space on Friday – our Space WOW day!

Subject specific information:

English

Writing:

Our writing focus for the next 2 weeks is recounts. Recounts are used to retell past events or experiences. The children will look at the many features of a recount including:
– past tense
– chronological order
– using time words
– using powerful verbs and adjectives.

By the end of Week 3 the children will have put all of these skills into practise by writing an incredible recount of their Space WOW day.  Some of these fantastic examples will be PUBLISHED on the blog for all to see so any writing practice you can do at home with your children will only help them make their recounts even more fabulous.

Reading:

We will continue with guided reading and activities linked to reading skills. We are really interested in sharing examples of information about SPACE. If you come across an article/ information page/ news page that would be of interest and is suitable to be shared with the class -please send it in!

Phonics:

As part of our daily recall, children are reading common exception words. Whilst most children are confident at reading them, we really want this to be evident in spelling when writing. Please support your child with spelling the following words correctly when they are doing any writing at home.

Maths

In maths this week we will continue our work on multiplication and division. Our lesson objectives for the week are:

  • Dividing by 10.
  • Dividing by 5.
