Year 1 Learning Term 5 Week 3

In week 4 we will be having a cultural enrichment week and so there is lots of information in this post about the exciting plans we have for this – please take a look to see How to support with this.

  • Friday 3rd May – Inset day (no children attending school)
  • Monday 6th May – Bank holiday Monday
  • Tuesday 7th May – please return your child’s ‘bag of belonging’ by this date (see information below)
  • Thursday 9th May – After school cultural food event (see poster below)
  • Saturday 18th May – Mayfair
  • Friday 127th May – Year 1 SS Great Britain Trip – teachers will be in contact to let parents who have offered to help if they are needed or not as soon as possible.

My Bag of Belonging
For our enrichment week we will be sharing our different cultures and interests or sports or other groups we belong to. During this week we will send home a paper bag containing the following…
1.A blank handshape. Please colour the blank handshape with a flag or flags of the countries represented in your family.
2. Please also bring your bag back to school on Tuesday 7th May with a few objects or pictures which are special to you, to talk about in class. The children will bring their bags home at the end of the week but we will keep the hands to make into bunting in school.

  • If your child is going to a sports after school club (e.g. Shine), please provide them with a sports kit to wear, rather than asking them to take their PE kit. PE kits should be in school every day and should be left in school.
  • We will be doing PE outside (weather permitting) in Term 5 and 6. Children can wear their school shoes to run around outside or you can provide them with a pair of trainers in their PE kit.
  • As we move into the summer terms, you might be thinking about getting your child some new summer shoes. Please note that our uniform policy is: “Footwear suitable for school activities.  Open toe sandals should not be worn due to health and safety concerns”.

Phonics: Phase 5c

Word of the week: engineering

This week will be all about bridges! We will be combining English with DT to explore, design and make a new bridge for the Avon Gorge. We will be inspired by the book:

We will be learning about and labelling 3 diagrams of different types of bridges (arch, beam and suspension) and using this research to design our own bridges.

Grammar: Exploring the different parts that make up a bridge and what their purpose is. Turn verbs into their progressive form using the suffix -ing. Use these words to make sentences to describe what each part does for the bridge.

We are going to be starting division this week and introduce this as sharing.
-To share objects equally between a number of groups.
-To understand that it is not always possible to share equally and that all groups must have the same amount to be fair.
-To recognise the link between arrays and sharing.
-To solve problems using sharing.
