Reception – Term 5, Week 4

  • Thursday 9th May will be a special non-uniform day, when children are invited to wear the colours of their nationality flag, or to come in cultural dress.
  • We would love to see photos of any gardening/growing you are doing at home – please send these in via Tapestry.
  • If your child is going to a sports after school club (e.g. Shine), please provide them with a sports kit to wear, rather than asking them to take their PE kit. PE kits should be in school every day and should be left in school.
  • We will be doing PE outside (weather permitting) in Term 5 and 6. Children can wear their school shoes to run around outside or you can provide them with a pair of trainers in their PE kit.
  • As we move into the summer terms, you might be thinking about getting your child some new summer shoes. Please note that our uniform policy is: “Footwear suitable for school activities.  Open toe sandals should not be worn due to health and safety concerns”.
  • We have noticed that some of the children are not understanding what they are reading. When you read with your child, please make sure they re-read the sentence fluently after decoding the words. Click here to see the video that was shared at the beginning of the year. When you are reading with your child, please make sure you are asking them questions so that they understand what they are reading. You can find example questions below. You can also learn more about comprehension in the video above at 6 minutes.
  • Please alert your child’s class teacher if your child finishes one side of their bookmark so that they can receive their first certificate in assembly. You can find information on our reading incentive by clicking here
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book. Please make sure the reading books come into school each day with your child.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.
  • Thursday 9th May – After school cultural food event (see poster below)
  • Saturday 18th May – Mayfair
  • Wednesday 22nd May – Reception  trip to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm. You will receive an email about this on Wednesday 24th April – please look out for it!

This week, the children loved drawing pictures of gardens on the iPads using Purple Mash. They logged in with their own login details and we talked about the importance of keeping this kind of information private. Alongside this, the children have loved watching their beans start to grow. We have been watering them and nurturing them. We are starting to see them ‘crack’ and are looking forward to seeing the shoots start to grow.

We are talking about how we all have different families which we belong to, and we would love to see a photo of you doing something special with your family. It could be a family celebration, or an activity you enjoy doing together like camping, baking or walking the dog!

You can also send us any moments that you feel are significant in your child’s learning or want to share with your child’s class teachers.

This week is our enrichment week where the children will have a wonderful variety of activities! We will be celebrating our differences, and also our belonging – to our families and to our school.

On Monday, we are fortunate to have language teachers from Redmaids’ High School coming in to teach the children some Spanish vocabulary! Throughout the week, we will be hearing stories from other cultures and in different languages, exploring art and music from different countries, and have an opportunity to make and eat Vietnamese summer rolls. On Thursday, Reception children will have an international dance workshop including West African and Carnival Dance.

Thursday will be a special non-uniform day, when children are invited to wear the colours of their nationality flag, or to come in cultural dress.

We will be celebrating with a Cultural Food-sharing Event on Thursday 3.30-5.30 in the Infant School Hall – EVERYONE IS WELCOME – please do come along to enjoy sampling different foods and relaxed time to chat with other families.

If you are able to offer samples of your family’s special food, please contact Mary Brand or Ella Grant on the Buttercup class email: Buttercup@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be discussing falling out with our friends and what can be the impact of using unkind words.

Communication and Language

We will be reading lots of stories from different cultures this week, including the one above which ties in with our cultural food sharing event on Thursday 3.30-5.30 in the Infant School Hall – ALL WELCOME!

We always encourage the children to engage in story times and non-fiction books in these ways:

Listen to and talk about stories to build familiarity and understanding.

Ask questions to find out more and to check they understand what is being said.

Articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences.

Connect one idea or action to another using a range of connectives.

Describe some events in detail.

Word of the Week: character

Physical Development

The children will be taking part in a carnival afro beats dance style workshop delivered by Movema.

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will be following the Phase 4 Mastery lessons.

We will practising reading and writing polysyllabic words.

We will revisit the common exception words: some,  come

We will practise blending phonemes to read, and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Writing:  We will use our learning in phonics to help us continue to write about a hobby, sport or activity we enjoy doing in our family. This is part of our work on identity and belonging we will be exploring in our enrichment week.

Maths

This week, we will start to explore sharing. The children will physically share objects equally.

Understanding the World

We will be making Vietnamese summer rolls, the lunch time snack from Vietnam.

Religion and Worldviews

We will be hearing two stories which show Muslims that it’s important to care for living creatures: ‘The Ants’ and ‘The Crying Camel’.

Expressive Arts and Design

In Daisy class, we will be looking into Argentinian street art and having a go at producing our own. In Buttercup class we will be researching Indian elephants and the significance of the elephant being dress up. We will be creating our own decorated Indian elephant art work. We hope that we will be able to display it in the hall for you to see on Thursday after school at the food sharing event.
