Reception – Term 5, Week 2

Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day. Thank you for your support with this.

Noticeboard

  • If your child completes one of the sides of their bookmark, please alert your child’s class teacher.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book.
  • We would like you to support your child to hold their pencil correctly when they are using them at home. Children should be using a tripod grip. Click here to see a BBC Bitesize video about how to hold a pencil.

Celebrations

The children have come back from the Easter holidays with lots of energy and enthusiasm. The adults in Reception have been particularly impressed with the children’s ball skills and hand-eye coordination this week. We have started our new topic ‘In the Garden’ this week. The children have loved using their new Garden Centre role play areas.

The children enjoyed planting beanstalk seeds in soil or in a paper towel. We are looking forward to watching them grow over the next few weeks. We will be looking at the different parts of plants, including the roots because some seeds are in clear plastic cups.

Star of the Week

Buttercup – Theo

Daffodil – George

Tapestry – Observation request

The focus this week is: Maths

This week you have two choices (or you could do both!)

  1. Every child has an addition (up to 10) colour by numbers in their book bag to complete. Click here if your child has misplaced the colouring, or they would like a challenge (up to 20 or 30!)
  2. Use items in your house to add them together. Encourage your child to write the number sentence down too. For example, have one group of 5 teddy bears and a group of 2 dollies. Encourage your child to write the number sentence (5 + 2 =) before writing the answer. Put the two groups together and count them again. Add the answer at the end of the number sentence to complete it.

Maths

This week, we will be learning about spatial reasoning. The children will be matching, rotating and manipulating shapes.

Understanding the World

We will be learning about past and present botanists and scientists. We will be taking inspiration from observational drawings made by botanists and looking closely as we draw in our collaborative class book.

Religion and Worldviews

We are continuing our Big Question: “How should we live our lives?” This week we will be thinking about who or what shows us good ways to behave. For example, parents, teachers, our school rules; as well as the Bible for Christians, the Qur’an for Muslims, and the Torah for Jewish people. We will read the story “A Bucket Full of Kindness”.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week during our Music lessons we will begin to learn how to feel rhythm and respond with movement. We will also sing as part of a group.
