Reception – Term 5, Week 5

This week, on 17th May 2023, Reception will be going to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm for their school trip. Please provide your child with a packed lunch on this day.

Noticeboard

  • If your child completes one of the sides of their bookmark, please alert your child’s class teacher.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book.
  • We would like you to support your child to hold their pencil correctly when they are using them at home. Children should be using a tripod grip. Click here to see a BBC Bitesize video about how to hold a pencil.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

Celebrations

It has been another short week at school. The children were surprised to see how much their beanstalks had grown over the long weekend. The children have loved learning about Jack and the Beanstalk and lots of them already knew the story, meaning they are able to retell it in a coherent way.

Star of the Week

Buttercup Class – Rosa

Daffodil Class – Polina

Tapestry – Observation request

The focus this week is: Physical

The children have been developing their ball skills. Use a ball to continue to develop reaction and response times. Some ideas and activities we have been doing in school are below:

  • Bounce the ball and catch it in your hands
  • Bounce the ball, see how many times you can clap, before you catch it again (only allowing one bounce)
  • Throw the ball up, let it bounce on the floor and then catch it
  • Throw the ball up, let it bounce on the floor, clap and then catch it

Please send us a photo or video of your child practising their ball skills at home.

This week’s learning

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be teaching the children about dealing with bullying and what they can do if they feel that another child is unkind to them. Our children define bulling as “when someone is mean to you (says or does unkind things)  again and again”. We teach children to say “stop it I don’t like it” and if they don’t, we tell an adult who can help us.

Communication and Language

This week, the children will get the chance to verbally retell the main events in the Jack and the Beanstalk story.

Word of the week: Pointillism

Physical Development

We will be developing our ball skills and exploring reaction and response in different ways.

Literacy

This week we will continue our phase 4 phonics, learning about adjacent consonants and how to blend words containing fl, fr, bl, br, cl, cr, fl, fr, gl, gr,pl, pr,  sc, sk. These are not digraphs. For example, flag, clap, desk

Common exception words: her, little, one

Writing: This week we will be re-writing the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Maths

This week, the children will be continuing to learn about addition.

Understanding the World

We will continue to observe our beanstalks growing and we will continue to record the changes happening in our class long-term study book.

Religion and Worldviews

This week, we will be hearing the story “Whoops! But it wasn’t me!” by Lauren Child, and talking about saying sorry and forgiving others.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week we will create Garden pictures using the technique ‘pointillism’.
