Year 1 News- Term 3, Week 4

This week is our whole school focus week on our book ‘The lost words’ written by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane, that was kindly gifted to each class from Father Christmas at the end of last year. The book includes beautifully illustrated pictures of wildlife with poems to accompany discontinued words that have been extracted from in the oxford dictionary, hence the title, ‘lost words’. This has prompted some strong opinions and rich discussion from some of our year 1 children, who argue that some of the words should remain! In year One, we have learnt in a cross curricular way with art, music and dance, science and enquiry as well as English/ writing opportunities in relation to the book.

In English we have written acrostic poems about wildlife of our choice. Editing and publishing them to the best of our ability before decorating the borders and creating some beautiful art to go alongside for our year group display board (see if you can spot some of these displayed around the school!).

Our focus sounds of the week this week are ‘air’ in ‘fair’ are in ‘care’ and ‘ear’ in ‘bear’. Please refer to your children’s sounds and words of the week book to practice our words to read and spell that contain some of these sounds.

In Maths this week we have been focussing on subtraction using a number line, working with numbers up to 20. We have thought about the various different ways we can represent a number story/ sentence and the alternate methods we can use and discussed which were our favourites and why (number line, fingers, counters, in head). To test our mental maths skills we have been focussing on counting forwards and backwards from any given number between 0-30.

In our PSHE learning, we have been thinking about how working with and supporting others (pairs or teams) can help us stretch and extend our goals. We have represented this with a flower analogy and made our own flowers using pipe cleaners using mixed Medias to decorate.

In classes, We explored our outdoor environment by taking part in a year group carousel of three activities. We spotted illustrations that had been taken from the book and hidden around the school grounds and were super sensible making our teachers feel very proud whilst doing so.
