Celebrations

We have loved welcoming the children back this week, their ability to adapt to the new school procedures and a new school year has been brilliant. These past couple of days have been spent getting to know each other and settling in to the expectations of Year 2. As well as this the children have enjoyed getting stuck into their new topic of Knights and Castles and loved collaborating together to build a giant dragon for each class, with each child creating their own beautiful dragon scale. We have also been learning about heraldry and designing individual shields which represent an interest of ours.

Week 2 Learning

English

In phonics this week we will be recapping the sounds and words we have previously been taught and will practise applying these in words and sentences. 

This week in writing, we will be reviewing the ELLI characters and how we can use these learning behaviours of resilience, curiosity, creativity, teamwork and linking our learning together to support us with our literacy skills. We will begin our new topic by looking into dragons, asking questions to find out more about them and use noun phrases to describe them so we can use this information to write sentences to describe our class dragon we made. 

Maths

This week in maths we are going to be focusing on partitioning numbers up to 100. The children will be looking at how numbers are made up. They will be using concrete resources, drawing pictures and use place value charts to support their abstract understanding. 

Topic

This week in History we will be learning about the different features of a castle. The children will be using different sources of information- books, postcards, guide books and maps, to research castles and collect information about the grounds, rooms and other areas of the castle. They will use the information they gather to design their own castle, which should include significant features that are labelled accurately. 

In R.E we will be looking at different types of celebrations. We will be considering the different ways people celebrate important events in their lives and how these might compare to one another. 

In P.S.H.E this week we will be thinking about our hopes and fears for the Year and how we can help each other to feel welcome and a part of a strong and secure classroom community.
