Noticeboard

  • Thank you to all of those who have already paid and consented to our school trip to…

The SS Great Britain – Friday, 19th May. If you have offered to help out on the trip your class teacher should have notified you about whether you are needed this time. Thank you

  • You will find below a grid showing the sessions to be taught each week. They do not exactly follow days as each class has different sessions due to support and PE times being different but it allows you to see the week as a snapshot of sessions.
  • Could you please make sure children have a change of shoes suitable for PE in their PE kits as most of our PE will be outside this term. Thank you.

We will always aim to get outside, whatever the weather, as much as possible so children will really need a waterproof coat each day.

Phonics Screening Check Information for Y1 Parents

What is the Phonics Screening Check?
Children in Year 1 throughout the country take part in a phonics screening check during the same week in June every year. This year this will take place during Week 2 of Term 6, Week starting 12th June 2023.  The phonics screening check is designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to an appropriate standard.

What Happens During the Screening?
The test contains 40 words. Each child will sit one-to-one with their teacher and read each word aloud to a teacher. The test is short and all children are different and will complete the check at their own pace. The list of words the children read is a combination of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (nonsense words). The children are used to the procedure and we carried out a midpoint screening check back at the end of February this year using a past year’s test.

Pseudo Words (Nonsense Words)
The pseudo words will be shown to your child with a picture of an alien. This provides the children with a context for the pseudo word which is independent from any existing vocabulary they may have. Pseudo words are included because they will be new to all pupils; they do not favour children with a good vocabulary knowledge or visual memory of words.

Reporting to Parents
We will report each child’s results to parents as part of the end of year annual report. They will also confirm if the child has met the standard threshold. If your child does not reach this threshold then they will retake the tests at the same time next year in Year 2.

How Are the Results Used?
Results from the check will be used by schools to analyse their own performance and for Ofsted to use in inspections.
