Reception – Term 6, Week 2

Noticeboard

  • If your child completes one of the sides of their bookmark, please alert your child’s class teacher.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book.
  • We would like you to support your child to hold their pencil correctly when they are using them at home. Children should be using a tripod grip. Click here to see a BBC Bitesize video about how to hold a pencil.

Celebrations

This week, the children have loved starting our topic about Minibeasts. They have been noticing minibeasts on the patio and on our Summer walk. The children walked around the school site and looked for signs of summer including wild flowers and trees with green leaves. We compared the school site to when we went on our Autumn, Winter and Spring walks and talked about the different seasons.

Below is a picture of ‘Penny Pigeon’ on her nest in the tree over the sensory garden.  She’s been sat in it since before half term. The incubation period is around 18 days so they might be hatching soon and then they fledge at 4 weeks so the children should be able to see the whole process. The children have been loving looking at her every day.

Star of the Week

  • Daffodil – Nelly
  • Daisy – Alex
  • Buttercup – Chester

Tapestry – Observation request

The focus this week is: Mathematics.

This week, we would like you to sit with your child and encourage them to write doubles number sentences. You could use practical resources (e.g. teddy bears) to find out the answers.

For example 1 + 1 = 2 or 2 + 2 = 4. Please support them to write numerals correctly and send us a photograph of their number sentences.

Click the links below to find out how to add observations from different devices.

This week’s learning

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Continuing our ‘Changing Me’ theme, we will be talking about respecting our bodies by making healthy choices of what we eat and which activities we do.

Communication and Language

We will continue to read poems from the Mini Beasties book throughout the week. The children will be encouraged to verbally make up their own poems and perform them to the class.

Word of the week: poetry

Physical Development

We will be practising team games on the field in preparation for sports day.

Literacy

This week we will become masters in our phase 4 phonics, we will revisit reading and spelling  words with the adjacent consonants:  dr, cl, bl, lk, lp, xt, st, sm, sn, fr, fl

Common exception words:  like, so, do

Writing: This week we will be writing a dictated sentence about a ladybird.

Maths

This week, we will continue to learn about odd and even numbers. The children will be encouraged to notice patterns e.g. 1 (odd), 2 (even), 3 (odd), 4 (even) etc.

Understanding the World

We will be welcoming live ladybird larvae into the classroom. We will be researching a minibeast and working on a collaborative minibeast class book. We will be talking about lifecycles and life journeys, linking to humans and school.

Religion and Worldviews

Continuing our Big Question: “How should we live our lives?”, we will hear a story from the Bible about Jesus meeting Zaccheus. We will think about how this story tells Christians that people can change when they know Jesus. They can say sorry and stop doing bad things. Christians should show kindness to others even if other people don’t like them.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week in Art we will be using Watercolour to paint a picture of a minibeast.
