Reception – Term 1, Week 4

Noticeboard

  • On Tuesday 12th September, you should have received a link to create a Tapestry account. If you haven’t already created an account, please check your junk folder and create your account. You won’t be able to see any observations yet. 
  • Open mornings will be on 23rd February 2024 and 5th July 2024. These usually start at 9:00 and finish around 10:00. Timings will be confirmed closer to the date. 
  • We are inviting you to a Reading and Phonics meeting on 27th September 2023, 2:50 – 3:10 pm in the main school hall. This will be followed by a Phonics learn-a-long, where you are invited into the classroom to take part in a lesson alongside your child on 18th October 2023 at 9:00 – 9:30am.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book. 
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.
  • Please look out for an email from Tapestry. This will enable you to activate your account. 
  • We will be sharing about our different families in class. Please send in a photo of your child’s family either to the class email, or printed out. Class email addresses: daisy@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk or buttercup@henleaze-inf.bristol.sch.uk

Celebrations

The children have really enjoyed being part of a class of 30 children this week. The children who were in school in the mornings and those in the afternoon have met every morning this week. They have loved making new friends. All of the adults in Reception have been impressed by the children’s ability to learn phonics. This week we have learnt s, a, t and p.

This week’s learning

This week, we will continue to learn about the ELLI Owl.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be learning how to recognise and manage our feelings.

Communication and Language 

We will continue reading our key text “Owl Babies” and act out the story in class.

We will continue to play games which support children to hear the component sounds (phonemes) in words e.g. “Put your hands on your h-ea-d; put your hands on your kn-ee-s.”

Physical Development

We will be practising our fine motor skills with activities involving lots of resources e.g. playdough, paintbrushes, pompoms, lego, pens and pencils. We will be exploring our gross motor skills using lots of resources e.g. bikes, trikes and scooters, ribbons, bats and balls and climbing on the mountain.

Literacy

This week we continue with Phase 2 phonics and we  will be teaching the children the phonemes i, n, m and d. The children will learn these phonemes (sounds) and practise writing them in isolation and in words.

Maths

This week, the children will me matching and sorting items into categories. 

Understanding the World 

We will be learning new facts and vocabulary about owls. We will be exploring the playground to discover what natural materials we can find to create owl artwork. We will be continuing to make new friends and get used to our school day. We will be talking about differences and similarities between school and nursery.

Religion and Worldviews

Thinking about our big question for terms 1 and 2 “Who am I?” We will be talking about places that are special to us, including places of worship.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week the children will be creating their own owl artwork using different a range of different media.
